quote:
Washington (CNN)A number of cruise missiles launched from a Russian ship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.
Monitoring by U.S. military and intelligence assets has concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran. One official said there may be casualties, but another official said this is not yet known.
It's unclear where in Iran the missiles landed. The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, meaning the likely flight path for missiles into Syria would cross over both Iran and Iraq.
The Russians have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat.

I posted that on the poli board a few minutes ago..
Putin may be a bigger friend to U.S. citizens than first thought. He may take out Iran's nuclear aspirations for us.

I remember making a bunch of posts saying Russia is a paper tiger a while back -- they always have this weird cult following in America where people say Putin is a genius, the Russian military would destroy the American military.
They don't have the funds, the men, the equipment or the support to sustain war with America.
They are the exact same as North Korea -- nuclear weapons so no one does anything to provoke them. They would get absolutely fricking smashed in a war without nuclear weapons.

This sort of thing would sometimes happen to early generation versions of our Tomahawk missiles too.
Those weapons used inertial guidance and terrain mapping to find their target and sometimes they'd just plain old, straight out miss a turn. In an amusing twist, during the first gulf war several times they missed a turn because their maps used a building as a waypoint, but said building no longer existed because we'd blown it flat in earlier attacks. The integration of GPS has greatly lessened the chance of this sort of thing happening.
As far as Russian operations in Syria, I hope they keep shooting away. They've been able to gather real world operational intelligence and performance data on our weapons systems for more than a decade now. I really appreciate that they're now returning the favor.

"I'm sorry, comrade. I'm doing my best."
"Who made this man a gunner?"
"I did, comrade. He's my cousin."
