If we ran more Read Option, Should we give JJ another game?

Will Collier had some solid points earlier today about Gus/Rhett removing the "true" read option from our playbook. Our bread and butter play was effectively eliminated and it has crippled our offense tremendously. Running lanes were stuffed, pass plays were better defended and a real threat was neutralized by our own playcalling.
In the second half vs LSU, we saw the playbook find the lost pages with the read option and the offense started to find some life. Yes, LSU may not have been playing 100% effort, but we still started seeing progress which has been absent all year.
The Argument for a Jeremy "Wait I can run?" Johnson
- Jeremy Johnson is built to run the inverted veer, the play that made Chocolate Gatsby Famous
- Some of the few successful passing plays AU has run has been the packaged play
Thoughts?
Jeremy Johnson ran a 60+ yd TD, he may not be Marshall but he isn't Chris Todd or Clint Mosely. By giving him more free ran to make plays with his feet, we can give simple reads and give him an easy out to run for a couple yards. Removing defenders from passing zones will make his reads easier and give him more room to operate.
I accept that Johnson won't be Tom Brady, he just isn't that good looking. I just see a lot of his errors in reads being eliminated if the defense takes those underneath zones and replaces them with QB spies

I agree. He needs to run the read. And he needs to understand he is not too valuable to risk running. He can run, and that is probably what he needs to do until he gets his head right.

I have no clue anymore and have no high expectations of this year turning around. It will be a defining moment for Gus as a head coach if he were to get things on track. Next game should be a great indicator.

I agree. We need to somehow survive Miss State, then realistically, the team has three weeks to retool.
Our Defense looked really bad, but hopefully that Miss State Oline is still struggling.

I have zero confidence in his passing skills. I don't care how well he can run the Read Option, which I doubt is all that great, he will still have to throw the football, which he can't do.

We need to let Johnson run the inverted Veer and be the inside threat then combine that with Kerryon Johnson/Roc THomas on the outside.
That is how OMac averaged 10+ YPC in 2010. Johnson is a big enough runner that the defense is forced to make a major schematic choice.

I don't think JJ can run the ball well enough to be effective all game.. Yes I know he did it one time Saturday.

I thought we were all pretty much in agreement that his TD Saturday was luck?

That's the thing, he doesn't need to be Tom Brady throwing the ball out there.
Look at the play schematic I just posted, what you'll see is that two scenarios play out
A) Scheme for DE to play QB - QB gives ball
This means the defense is relying on their CBs not only beating the block but also making a tackle in space against a RB likely bigger in size
ALternatively, they can roll the safety in for run support/blitz off the edge. This leaves downfield passes completely open over the top. JJ may not make good decisions but one on one is a safe throw
B) Scheme for DE to play RB- QB takes the ball
If DE plays RB, OT is blocking LB and HBack would be pulling as lead blocker. Considering the safety has pass responsibilities, the hesitation will lead to minimum 2-3 yard play likely 8-10 yards if OL gets seals off DL and opens hole.

Cam and NM were very shaky in the passing game early in their careers. They would tuck and run before reading the D and passing. MAYBE JJ just needs to run a bit more until the game slows down.

He's not even Clint Moseley

2013, we were winning by 30+ pts while throwing less than 10 times per game. I realize OL, HB, RB, QB were better That said, against defenses like MSU, UK, TAMU, Idaho, SJSU we should be able to find success.

At this point I'm watching games not in hope of a win but in hopes of growth and improvement. I also don't want to see quit in the players faces as we did in 11, 12, and LSU on Saturday.
I don't want to see anymore 49-0, 38-0, 63-21 beat downs.
It was garbage time, but the offense started to click on Saturday. Hopefully, Gus can use that to make adjustments for the remainder of the season.

JJ can't be saved right now. The only thing that can help him in the long run is taking a break. Malzahn is hurting him and the team by leaving him in. If he ends up starting against MSU... That's a serious problem with the HC.

Seems like the QB read to the outside is open most of the time too. DE and LB take the HB every time.

Well even if it's not the answer to our offense for the entire season I think it could help. The problem with JJ is mental right now. If he was truly this bad he wouldn't have done anything against Arky last year either. If he can make a play here and there with his legs, it may calm him down enough to make passes and give him some confidence.

No. He is afraid of contact and will never be an effective runner. That was evident when he was the lead blocker on the reverse play we ran. He never touched a defender and was trying to avoid contact.

I think it would do him good to run the ball a few times. Maybe get some good yards... do wonders for his self esteem.
Also I would think that getting hit (not too hard) a few times could possibly knock the passing mechanism back into place.

Part of that may be Gus telling him not to be a runner. If you build the mentality of not taking hits, your QB won't take hits.
If you start telling him, "You are 250, let's do this and run" he may not be Mike Alstott out there but he will run bigger than OMac
