Some random thought on the offense.

Some things I would try in the running game.
Scrap the pistol. We aren't getting anything out of that formation on the ground. We've been really bad between the tackles.
Use more pulling OL in the run game. We've been succesful with this in the past. It naturally creates more holes in the defense as opposed to trying to push the DL out of the way you get them moving. You could also add a read in there where the QB could get out the backside of the play if the DE crashes.
Move McGovern back to guard. As mentioned above we are really struggling getting any kind of push up the middle. He's the best guard on the team. At least try it and see what Cuellar or Rhodes look like at tackle.
Find a way to get Wingo more involved. He's the fastest guy we have and if we are going to struggle executing down the field we need to start creating some more chunk plays. He needs to get a shot at returning punts.
I'd also institute some one read throws for Mauk early in the game where the ball comes out quick and he doesn't have to think. Pop passes to the TE and clear out routes which open up slants and outs would be effective. This would also get him looking at the short pass and more importantly the middle of the field.
Slow the pace. Run the most easily executed plays you have and simplify the gameplan. We have a great defense. Help them out with time of possession and field position and we can win games that way.

I cannot believe they only gave Wingo one carry yesterday.

Didn't Abbington only get one carry, too?

Not sure about his carries but I don't remember seeing him after he dropped the ball that hit him in the wrong place...his hands.

The drop was on the first drive. Abbington had 2 or 3 runs later in the game the first went for about 12-13 yards. Seems like he run up the middle for nothing (shocker nothing up the middle has worked) and maybe had a run to the right.
Wingo's run was actually a pass. Thought he might get more playing time with Blair/Dilosa out. If the accident happens on Tuesday that might have been the case.

I did see Abbington lower his shoulder to lay a hit on someone. That was encouraging.

Just such a strange year.
Of the top 5 rushing yards:
1 is the QB
1 is a walkon
1 has 3 carries (Abbington's yards per should get him more touches)
Of our top 5 receiving yards:
2 are RB's
1 is a TE

Just looking at some numbers:
Mauk is averaging about 14 yards per series he leads.
Lock is averaging about 30 yards per series he leads.
Blair/Richard/Laurent/Reese/Hall/Wingo have all been non-factors/disappointments. Not blaming the player. Could be the plays. Could be lack of field time. But just guys I was really expecting more from, especially against high school teams.
Hunt is probably our best RB at this point and that says something. Running Witter up the middle is like the Rams running Austin up the middle. Like I said earlier, Abbington probably should get more touches (6.3 y/c in just a few touches). Steward's done very little with his opportunities (1.8 y/c).
For being a supposed gunslinger, will Mauk ever break 200 yards?

Total SEC QBR Leaders. 127 total QB's rated.
1- Chad Kelly OM 92.3
2- Brandon Harris LSU 90.7
5- Greyson Lambert UGA 89.6
21- Dak Prescott MSST 78.5
24- Brandon Allen ark 77.9
28- Jake Coker UA 76.4
41- Kyle Allen aTm 69.2
66- Joshua Dobbs tenny 53.9
74- Will Grier fla 52.7
79- Patrick Towles UK 51.4
90- Maty Mauk Miz 44.7
98- Jeremy Johnson Aub 42.3
111- Johnny McCrary Vand 36.7
USCe is not rated.
117- Fredi Knighten ArSt 30.8
65- Bryant Shirreffs Conn 54.1
This rating accounts for running and scrambling which has been MM's so called strength. Based upon this rating he is below average to-date at his position against our OOC competition.
Yes, the OL is a hot-burning dumpster fire mess. But MM has not progressed from last year. I think he has plateaued. I do not believe that he makes reads effectively. I would like to see Lock and maybe others get more reps.
Corrected score just coming through...Mizzou 9 - Mauk 6. UConn's only points came off MM's INT.
Through 3 OOC games, the stat of the year so far...Total Rushing TD's - 1. ONE! The two yard keeper by MM vs. UConn. That's against SEMO, Ark State and UConn gents.
HCGP, Henson and Ricker are not doing their jobs. IF I was to boo anyone, it would be the coaches and not the players. They recruited/trained these athletes.

I really think we've been seeing some very generic plays. Doesn't excuse bad play though. I'll be highly disappointed if they don't script better plays and be more aggressive this weekend.

I agree jafo. My guess is that the coaches felt that we should have been able to dominate the OL against SEMO and Ark State. We did not. So, they worked on the OL during the week and tried again to win the "push" against UConn. We did not. RB's are not the major problem. Ya gotta block first, and Mizzou's OL is just not getting the job done.
ONE RUSH TD in three OOC games!!! If the OOC competition had been tOSU, MSU and USCw...I would somewhat accept it.

I hope we see more Ray Wingo. He catches the ball.

Just watching two games on TV and attending the UCONN game two things are very clear to me. The offensive issues really fall on the OL and the WR. Im not sure that it matters which QB is taking snaps until those two things addressed/rectified. WR are running rounded routes, nothing crisp, no separation and dominated off the line at the snap. The OL just looks lost especially during rushing plays and that is a head scratcher to me honestly. You can have a bad pass protect line that can run block down hill. We have neither at this point. Just my two cents.

I actually thought the OL looked better. Especially in pass pro. Run blocking still has a ways to go, but there were also some holes our backs have been missing.
I'm no scout though.

Me either brother. Have not watched the replay of the UCONN game yet so Im only judging that on what I witnessed from the seats. I will happily take your word for it that pass pro looked better. Sometimes its hard to tell with Mauk bailing out of the pocket so much.

More on the OL. I think Ricker pretty much stated that they don't trust any of our other guys playing tackle. They realize McGovern is a better guard, and he wants to play guard but they also feel he's the best tackle we have.
I think Cuellar not being ready to go has really thrown a wrench in their plans. He was an EE too.
@DavidCMorrison: A.J. Ricker said Connor McGovern "is playing at a high level at left tackle. I wish things were maybe different and he could play guard."
@DavidCMorrison: Ricker: "We need him out there. Maybe some more depth where he could play, he knows he's a guard. He's doing what's best for this team."

WR was a known issue coming into the year. OL not so much. Either need to get Hansbrough back and healthy or one of the other backs to take some steps forward.

Completely agree. Might get better with Hans, but should never ever even contemplate it with Witter and company.

Would love to see this but apparently just isn't going to happen. Some wasted scholarships it would appear.

I thought the pass blocking looked good too. I also agree with the above who think Hunt is our best RB. This offense is not as bad as it has appeared and has plenty of up side. It may be too late in the season to change run blocking schemes, but short passes to the running backs may make the best use of their talents anyway. Changing up the play selection would be much simpler than an entire scheme overhaul.
