On offense, I'm not sure we'll see a defense like them again this year. They blitzed every play, and that shite would never fly in our conference. I hope that was the major contributing factor to our poor run game and QB inconsistencies (although QBs really didn't play poorly just need things to come together a little better).
On defense, wow - but I wonder how powerful their offense really is and I wonder how our DBs would play when the D line isn't quite as dominant in terms of getting pressure. Our DBs really need to be able to stand on their own if needed.
Who were the most impressive defenders ranked to you?
Myles
Hall
Evans
D. Wilson
B. Williams
I don't even know...there were so many

I didn't hear B-Will's name all night except when the announcers started talking about him possibly coming back in at RB
That's usually a very good thing for a corner

Yep. He made at least 2 open field tackles that I saw, one of which saved a first down

Obviously the defense was a huge improvement, more than anyone could expect in a single offseason. B Williams did great for being so green at the position. Also I think WR play was improved. There were some dropped passes and Speedy was invisible, but RSJ had yards after contact and Kirk is the real deal. Can't not be excited about that.
I am most worried about the offensive line. Kyler didnt get those second half snaps because of some pre-arranged deal, he was out there because the line wasn't blocking the blitz well and his mobility is what finally pushed them back. The running game didn't get yards they needed to get, Carson didn't even have 100 yards on like a billions carries. Unless that line jells a little more before SEC play we will be in trouble.

My post from the prediction thread where I predicted we'd win 38-27.
LET'S GET HYPED!

ASU was held to 27 in two of their three losses last year. Lowest point totals of the year. If we hold them to under 20, the hype will be unreal. I don't think we will though.

I don't know just how good or bad ASU is time will tell. That being said I like what I saw from the D, still room for some improvement but overall a solid performance. The O line needs to get their shite together or it's going to be a long painful year. I'm KA just had a case of playing against his home state jitters if not......KM is scary fast but doesn't throw as well at this level (needs time I think). Our running game needs work. The play calling was meh.
If you don't think SEC teams will blitz every play if it slows us down you're wrong.

Rather than name all of the things they did well, I'll focus on the improvements needed:
Offensive line: The 2 positions that did not have returning starters (left tackle and left guard) struggled a lot. Each time the QB was sacked or the RB was stopped in the backfield, they rushed right up the left side. That MUST improve quickly. Keaton Sutherland started at LG and was replaced by Jeremiah Stuckey late in the first quarter. It might not be a bad idea to increase Koda Martin's playing time if Gennesy continues to struggle.
Running Backs: The injury to James White really hurt our offense badly. I'm sure when Tra Carson doesn't have to carry the ball 29 times in a game his production will be much better. White was carving up the Sun Devil defense before he got hurt. I don't think we have any choice but to burn the redshirt on Kendall Bussey. We can't go forward with just one running back.
Quarterback: I'm positive that quarterback play will improve when the left side of the offensive line improves.
Wide Receiver: Ricky Seals-Jones still isn't playing like he's as big as he is. Need to see more Jordan Davis and where the hell was Speedy Noil.
Defensive Line: Can't find any fault in their play. Need Obioha and Henderson back.
Linebacker: We're going to have to burn the shirts on all of our freshmen if we keep losing linebackers like this. That's really the only complaint.
Safety: Have to cut down on the dumb penalties. The late hit by Dunning extended a drive.
Cornerback: Need to look for the ball more. A better quarterback will take advantage of this.
Special Teams: Hope Kaser isn't hurt badly or we'll have to try our LaCamera at punter.

I was going to make my own thread, but this is good.
My thoughts:
Kyle Allen: He impressed me MOST with his MATURITY. It takes a level headed man to face adversity the way he did. I'm not talking about on the field, I'm talking about how he mentally handled sitting for a couple of series. The easy thing to do was to allow self doubt to creep in and withdraw from the game. He instead kept talking to teamates and providing encouragement. He then shined when he cam back into the game and LED. Just a very impressive amount of composure and leadership by example. Well done, young man.
Kyler Murray: Faster than JFF. Just electric. He neeeds better touch and damn he looks small out there but he's a true freshman. Provided a much needed spark and probably made the ASU Def Coord cuss up a storm and no doubt altered the plan of attack.
OL: had a VERY difficult task, and I think they did well enough. Those D sets and fronts were exotic and pressure came from everywhere. I want to see how they do against a more conservative D set. ASU is based on chaos, defensively (I love that too)
RB: he was a straight up man.
WR: still lots of dropped balls, but flashes of what can be. I'm excited
ST: Bertolet held serve, and we had a punt returned for a TD. A+ here
DL: WOW! That is a stout front four. excited
LB: Hope Walker isnt too bad off. They did well
DBs: Still not turning the head back quick enough to play the ball but I'm not complaining.
Tackling was so improved. The hits were with ill intent. Finally had a SEC nasty streak and they looked fast.
Offense was sputtering but I think it's more to do with ASU's chaos rather than ineptitude.
*we got away with some PI/Defensive holding. I also think the personal foul called on ASU against a slidiing Allen was BS. That was a bang bang play and I don't fault the defender.
Very happy with the win!

Our backup punter would start for most in the country. Shane tripucka will get his own shot at a NFL roster.

Great way to put it. They played with a fire we haven't seen around here since RC was in his prime.

he had a really solid night.

yup. worried about our oline too. doesn't look promising right now, we've got three weeks to get it together.

Arizona state blitzes more guys more often than anyone in the country. I thought our OL looked better than expected. Thy have cupcakes to gel.

Agree with most all of that but would also add dropped passes. Ratley was getting hype from some and he dropped some big time throws. Needs to fix that. That pass from Allen in the first drive was a sure fire td if he pulls it in. Beautiful throw stepping up in the pocket.
But yeah my biggest concerns are Oline, receivers winning battles, play calling and being thin at rb & lb.

I have no idea what is going on with Noil. But Kirk and Reynolds are our playmakers on offense. We should feed them the ball.
Seals-Jones was catching the ball well, but shouldn't he be breaking some tackles?

I was thinking the same thing after I saw another shoestring tackle bring his huge arse down. Evans would have just bounced that defenders head off the turf like a basketball. Then again, that's probably why Evans is a beast in the nfl.

I agree with most everything here. If you watched any other games this weekend, almost everyone played sloppy and have lots of areas that require more focus.
For us it was week one against a good opponent. I'm happy with where we are overall but we need to make improvements in a several areas over the coming weeks. This week didn't change much except give us a quality non-conference win. We could still end up finishing almost anywhere if we don't take care of business. Now if/when some of those problem areas become more of a trend that's where we will have problems. I've been surprised every step of the way at how stubborn this staff can be in some areas and how flexible they are in other areas.
