I find this entertaining and interesting.. lol
quote:
A Tennessee judge last week refused to grant a couple divorce, citing the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling allowing gay marriage
quote:
The gay marriage ruling meant the court found the state is "incompetent to define and address such keystone/central institutions such as marriage, and, thereby, at minimum, contested divorces," Hamilton County Chancellor Jeffrey Atherton wrote.
Now, Atherton contends, it is up to the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify "when a marriage is no longer a marriage."

No, he doesn't. He's an idiot. The U.S. Supreme Court also makes pronouncements on what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in criminal cases, but that doesn't render state courts incompetent to sentence criminals.

Umm.. because they defined what they could and could not sentence them to as defined by their ruling.

This ^. He's being childish. He's being spiteful because the Supremes determined that marriage as a civil right extends to gays. So does divorce.

The supreme court said states don't have the right to define what is or isn't a marriage so how do they now have the right to dissolve something they can't define?

States should be totally out of the marriage business now. The USSC clearly federalized it, should be up to federal judges to marry and grant divorces now if they want to be involved in it.

Bummer on the ankle. Sounds good and excited for the season. 2015 has so many possibilities for how the Sec West plays out. Have a good one

I love it. I feel sorry for the couple that he chose to make an example of though.

I wonder how many other judges follows suit.

Man this Supreme Court decision is going to cause a ton of ridiculous shite to happen. Mississippi at one point was talking about not even recognizing marriage at all just as a way to get out of having to give licences to gay couples.

Probably slim to none. It'd be awesome to see it start a groundswell of it though.

I'd agree with this. Across the board.
Marriage ought to be a religious event only. For legal issues, get a lawyer, sign contracts, designate Power of Attorney, have a will and whatever other legal issue one is concerned about in the event of a catastrophic injury or death or disbursement of assests. As well as for custody issues.
