Just a bunch of schools with an unimaginative mascot.

The tiger emerged as a symbol of Princeton, ironically, not long after Woodrow Wilson's class, at its graduation in 1879, gave the University a pair of lions to guard the main entrance to Nassau Hall.
Pretty sure Princeton is the oldest among american colleges and universities. As Yale had the Bulldogs, and many would emulate these schools, it is not surprising to see so many Tigers and Bulldogs today.

Missouri Tigers are the original tigers.
Well with the extremely relevant and important evidence above, what other conclusion could one draw??

You guys definitely aren't SEC.
East, Tennessee had the first paper in the entire US dedicated solely to abolition AND was an area that voted to stay with the UNION to the tune of 80-90 percent. We were considered the freest soil in the entire Union to speak about abolition. We were more union than most union states that were far more divided on the war. When TN had it's 2nd vote on secession the Governor sent troops to Knoxville to suppress the vote and confederate troops were seen as occupiers. When the state finally did secede we tried on more than one occasion to secede from the state. Our representatives were the only ones who stayed in congress - we did not leave the federal government.
When Knoxville was freed we threw a party for the Union Army. East, Tennesseans accompanied Sherman on his March. UT itself was pro-Union. And I could go on...
Of the founding SEC members only UGA is older than UT.
Point being: Confederate =|= SEC or South.

When they aren't copping from Big Bro, they're copping other schools ideas.

Missouri Tigers were first.
We are the Fighting Tigers.

the Louisiana Tigers were an infamous bunch of rough housers. Their ranks consisted mostly of ruffians, poor immigrant farmers and mercenaries from foreign wars, Jones said.
"If you were looking for something tough, there was nothing tougher than the Louisiana Tigers in the Civil War," Jones said.
Word is they liked to drink and fight each other as much as the enemy. So I'd say the moniker fits.
