While Auburn won the game, there are those out there who believe the Tigers' lackluster performance in the first half cost them a possible berth in the BCS title game.

Not the reason....just a convenient excuse for the talking heads to justify keeping Oklahoma in the 2 slot.

Didn't Kirk claim if we beat what was like the 6th ranked UGA team at the time, he'd move us to 2nd?
Then we win in what was a dominating performance, and he backed out?

Auburn wouldn't have beat USC anyway, if we're being honest.

We would have been underdogs for sure... but that Auburn team was loaded and may have found a way.
Still the highest ranked AP team that year and the best Auburn team ever.

Doubtful, but we would have beaten Oklahoma by a couple TDs

I think those people are lying to themselves.

Their non-conference opponents finished with a losing record. And while Auburn did beat some great teams in the SEC that year, the SEC as a whole was very top heavy. Beyond Auburn, Georgia, LSU, and (to a lesser extent) Tennessee, the SEC sucked in '04.
7 of the 12 teams in the conference won 6 or fewer games that season. Only two teams in the SEC West finished above .500.

Auburn would have given USC hell. Oklahoma secondary was garbage that year. Auburn had better talent. Reggie McNeil literally broke his arm after throwing so many touchdowns on Oklahoma secondary. USC struggle with bad teams that year like UCLA.
Tuberville playing it safe against vtech cost him. I wonder if Brandon Jacobs was still with auburn would those FGs turned into touchdowns.

Spencer Pennington.
Forgot how wide open Keith Brown was on that first series.

It was actually because Oklahoma stole our game against a good Bowling Green team and left us with the fricking Citadel

Why not? In retrospect we now know that Auburn had more and better NFL talent than USC who was supposed to be tGOAT

That AU team was great and talented, but I don't think Tuberville's coaching style would have matched up well with USC and Carrol's. That USC team was insanely talented as well.
We'll never know. It would have been a good game.

This.
There wasn't a goddam thing Auburn could have done to convince the voters who self-justified their votes for USC #1 and Oklahoma #2 from before the season even started to change their minds. Wasn't gonna happen.
It should have though.

Campbell mobility would've kept usc off guard. The best way to attack auburn was to run straight at them. UT finally figured that out in 2 nd half of title game. Not sure usc would have patience to do that.

I'd love to know the ages of people posting in this thread. 2004 is the most hilarious example of revisionist history I've ever seen. It's truly amazing how easily the media is able to manipulate morons.

Personally, I think getting our shite pushed in by USC two years in a row the years prior is what REALLY did us in. Choice between undefeated SC and undefeated AU, when SC beat us twice H2H, I think that did it.
I loved the 2004 iron bowl. Croyle is still picking grass out of his hair...
