ESPN Rankings

Sorry if this topic has been discussed recently and I missed it, but ESPN's rankings seem to be a joke every year and I do not get it. With as much money as they have, how can they not get better evaluators of talent. I'm sure I'm biased about some of our commits, but I'll admit ESPN has overranked many of our players as well. Markeith Summers comes to mind. He was a 3 star on most services and he was an average receiver for us. ESPN had him as the number 3 receiver in the nation that year. Obviously evaluating talent is subjective to a degree, but the basketball and football rankings of ESPN always seem to be way off.

sometimes its less about actual eval and more about selling copy

There's not much ROI for ESPN to beef up their recruiting staff. They don't depend on accuracy to get eyes on their product like 247, Rivals, and Scout do. Most college football fans don't care enough about recruiting rankings to look beyond the first source, which is ESPN for most people.
I do think the "better rankings" of 247 and Rivals is a bit of a myth. None of the rankings are particularly accurate after about the top 100.

The best thing about 247 is the composite rankings

ESPN's rankings are always odd. They'll differ greatly on several players, with some being deserving and others undeserving. Having said that, all the recruiting services have their bad picks, so it's not just ESPN.

They rate players who play in their All American game higher. Notice how ESPN has more guys rated four or five stars when they play in the Under Armor All American Game. For instance, Josh Hammond is a 3 star on Scout, Rivals, and 247. But he is playing in the Under Armor All American Game. ESPN broadcasts that game and wants to be able to say they have more elite talent, so they bump him up to a four star.

I never noticed that, but it makes sense.

ESPN is predicting Shy Carter flips to LSU. Are they completely out of touch or do they know something? This is kind of like when they said Charlot would flip last year so they can play it as Bama "hanging on" to one of the prized Louisiana recruits.
