1999 Ole Miss 8–4 4–4 3rd (West) W Independence 22 22
2000 Ole Miss 7–5 4–4 3rd (West) L Music City
2001 Ole Miss 7–4 4–4 5th (West)
2002 Ole Miss 7–6 3–5 4th (West) W Independence
2003 Ole Miss 10–3 7–1 T–1st (West) W Cotton 14 13
2004 Ole Miss 4–7 3–5 3rd (West)
I think so. He's done some good stuff at Duke since then but it seems he only had one really good year in 2003 and basically hovered around 7 wins the rest of the time

Probably...yes. They just made an awful hire after firing him.

At that time, probably not. Should have gotten at least one more year. Then we really screwed up hiring orgeron as a HC. Looks like it's all working out fine now though. Freeze recruits better and knows how to put people who know how to coach around him.

True. You guys are a burgeoning powerhouse program.

These replies cover everything. Good work guys

Cut also had major health problems at the end of his career which limited his ability to lead the program. His recruiting was very poor beyond getting Eli. Eli's receivers his senior year were no better than the starting lineup at MUS.

Agreed. About the only thing to ask would be if Oregeron was a better recruiter than Cutcliffe, and therefor left more in the cupboard when he left - or if OM would have been better off keeping Cut for a couple more years? Either way, I think OM has a good one in Freeze.

Pete Boone insisted Cutcliffe make changes in his coaching staff. Cutcliffe refused. He left Boone no choice.

No.

Yes. He had to have triple by-pass surgery in March 2005 and then complications w/ that led to further surgery and his resignation from Notre Dame in July. Those health conditions would have killed his already pedestrian recruiting. So it was absolutely the right move but arguably for the wrong reasons. Like someone already said, it was the hire that came after that killed us. cuts heart not in it

Did TN make the right call by not hiring him a few years later??

I look at it as we had to go through all of those coaches to get to Freeze and I couldn't be happier.

Cutcliffe wasn't cut out for the ultra-competitive SEC as a head coach. A head coach is the CEO and he was better suited as a coordinator.
He wasn't committed to the recruiting grind, hence why Ole Miss was 2-star central after all of his good assistants left for the NFL and other gigs. From a PR perspective, he wasn't the ideal face of the program, with his age and health issues in consideration.
In fairness to him, the Ole Miss Administration was a shitshow infested with GOBs who had no forward-thinking vision (and just wanted their seat at the table), so he wasn't exactly working with a full deck of cards.

The real mistake was firing Nutt.

quote:How do you explain his success at Duke? What you say is probably true but you are looking at it from a hindsight perspective. He was fired because Boone wanted him to fire some assistants and he refused. It seemed like a noble thing for him to do at the time by showing loyalty to his assistants. However, he had a buyout. They had zilch! Turned out not so good for his assistants. Plus, his health issues came about after he left Ole Miss.

Duke is in the ACC, and they get to play a lot of ACC teams. However, Cut still failed to even make a bowl his first four seasons and went 6-6 his fifth. That would get you fired in the SEC.

His health issues were there all along. Just became public knowledge when he took the Notre Dame job.
