Not a good sign when round 30 and 35 picks choose to go pro versus another year in college they absolutely need.
Not very common for that low of a pick to leave across baseball.
Hope the program is okay.

Spoon didn't increase his stock after a HUGE improvement... No surprise he's lleaving.

It is when seniors are paid pennies and a guy like Wernes will be able to pay off everything he owes.
Spoon has already graduated so he has nothing else left to accomplish in college. What leverage he does have as a RS Jr. means it is time to get what money he can now rather than not be drafted next year as a senior.

Seniors get drafted high very often, 69 on Day 2 last year. Hell the Cards drafted a senior in the first round last year to boot.
Getting drafted in the 20th round as a senior would still get you more money than the 35th round as a junior.
Wernes is another guy that could have easily boosted into the top 10 rounds.
Oh well who cares if we suck it's college baseball.

The seniors that get drafted on day 2 are paid pennies in regard to the slot values of rounds 3-10 like I said so teams can save total pool money for tougher signs of HS talent.
No it wouldn't because seniors have zero leverage. They must take what the team would give them. Getting drafted earlier doesn't automatically equate more money in this system. Wernes top 10 rounds lol. All he has is a glove.
Yea it would've been brilliantly stupid for him to come back and turn down the assumed 20k-25k that he got to pay off his school loans for the 10k or less next year he would'be been offered.
You need to realize the number of college baseball players whose family or the player themselves are going into debt in order to play the sport with the 11.7 scholarships over 35 players.

I guess this takes a little of the guessing out of next year's roster at least.
C- Pennell
1B- Gassaway
2B- Nomura
SS- Bernal
3B- Spanberger?
OF- Bonfield
OF- Benninghoff (DVH is supposedly really high on him)
OF- Eagan
DH- Shaddy
Not including newcomers because who knows what will happen with them and I haven't seen them play, but obviously some of them will be factored in too

I didn't watch a ton of Hog games...lost the urge after my playing days were ended.
Wernes didn't seem to bring much offensively. Decent glove, but you would think a program like Arkansas could do better.
I'm sure player attrition added to that
Just my .02

Wernes was a JUCO transfer, his Sophomore season he was terrible.
Winter ball into this year he greatly improved, one of the best defensive 3B's in college. His bat also came around big time, something that with another year would have potentially been phenomenal. We'll see if he continues to grow in pro ball.
2014 Wernes: .217/.317/.223 0HR 18RBI 18R
2015 Wernes: .280/.375/.431 5HR 26RBI 49R

That's so bad honestly.

Eagen and Bonfield are the only ones I have any confidence in.

Same reason why they are leaving is the same reason why the former players never come back to support the program.

DVH been doing a lot of processin' this week.
The incoming class is super weak on paper
The next one appears to be progressing to be fairly epic.

Cliff Lee was at the super regional and Matt Reynolds and James McCann supported us a lot on Twitter after we made Omaha

support the program?

Kowalchuk, Wise, Carver and Goodwin are all on staff as VAs, SA and Dir of Baseball OPS.
Most of the players that have went on to the minors or majors are a little busy this time of year.

To some, this narrative does not compute...

This is what happens with the new draft rules and teams looking to save signing bonus money so they can spread it around in later rounds
