I think that the point was that John David Crow was appreciated outside of just aTm. That he was honored in Alabama as well.

That's odd since he wasn't a Junction Boy
IIRC, the class of 1957 were freshmen the year after Junction.

That's correct, Crow was not a Junction Boy as Freshman couldn't play back then. My Dad was a classmate and friend of JDC and was Class Agent and Head Yell Leader for their Class. He always proudly declares that they are the only Class in A&M history with a Heisman winner, an A&M President, and a building named after one. "We're good, we're great we're the Class of '58!" he loves to say.
A few tidbits:
Crow was in the same recruiting class as the legendary HS phenom Kenneth Hall. My Dad told me that after the first practice JDC thought he better find a new position because there was no way he was going to be the RB with him around. Hall got sideways with Bear though and didn't like playing defense (it was still 2 way football then) while Crow excelled defensively. Hall quit school and the path opened for JDC.
JDC is the main reason that A&M had the 10 year series with LSU in the '80s and '90s. When he was in school A&M played LSU annually, though always at BR. When he became Asst AD under Sherrill in the 80's he pursued the LSU series as he always enjoyed the game and the ties between the schools, he was also of course a Louisiana boy.
JDC was a big advocate of A&M joining the SEC and playing SEC teams.
I believe JDC still holds the NFL record for most touchdown passes by a Non Quarterback. He was used throughout his career as a passer out of the RB position.
As has been mentioned, he donated his personal Heisman to the Bear's museum in Alabama while the school's copy is the one that is displayed in the A&M Football complex.

quote:Do you remember that "bad" eye he had? I believe he must have had a medical problem, maybe as a child because when he'd scowl and be looking at you from 2 directions, it'd make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I was sitting next to him at an Alabama basketball game once when somebody asked him some question that pertained to Coach Bryant and he stared off for a few seconds and then said, "Coach Bryant is a.....mean man". The way he said it was funny as hell!
I have some mutual cousins with JDC. He and my dad were tight once upon a time but I only really knew him in the '70s when he was coaching at NLU(ULM). (As a kid I tried to copy the droopy grin. My mom reslly, really hated it.) I would occasionally see him at weddings and funerals but I never really knew him as an adult. Very friendly man though, and seemed quite the bruiser in his day.

His trophy belongs with Bear. It was his to give. We have a statute, our trophy, and JDC was heavily involved with the program up to the very end, but the trophy belongs to the Bear as much as it does anyone else.
That being said, JDC was probably the toughest sumbitch to hold a pigskin in generations of the sport. A true hero in his own respect.
