That is the only way they will win the SEC West.

No, no you have it all wrong. History is all that matters. Forget the coach or talent or any other factor. Only history is relevant to now in college football.
That is why I keep betting thousands of dollars on Princeton and Army to win it alll.

Giving up 59 points is totally attributable to the offense.

Nah, we got what we needed. A good DC who will bring in good talent. If we had this two years ago we would likely have had at least one NC.
Good luck fielding a good defense when they practice against a flag football offense.

I get your point, but the offense did the defense no favors that day.

A&M needs to fire Sumlin and hire a smash mouth football coach
That is a bad plan.
In 2015 college coaches get less time with their players than in previous times in college football, or what players get with their high school coaches currently. In the Texas High School football environment, kids get developed early at levels equal to non-Power 5 conferences. By the time college coaches get the players the mold is set and hardened in the kiln that is the popularity of Friday Night Lights. On top of that a lot of the most talented players have an ego as big as Texas due to being a local celebrity, and often they don't want to buy into a brand new "smashmouth system" that is different than most Texas high schools use.
Put it all together and to have a smashmouth coach in Texas is like swimming against the current. You don't leverage high school training, and you don't leverage years of 7 on 7 summer camp stuff. Even worse, you have to deprogram all of that. It is a tall task for any coach. Our best bet is what we did- stick to Sumlin's system and give him a better defense. To do anything else would be very risky, as only the Nick Sabans of the world have the kind of reputation needed to put those Texas boys in line (and as we all know he ain't coming to Texas). Successfully surfing this wave is the key to Baylor's recent success.
Now if you want to argue that this dynamic and an emphasis on high school development is the reason a state with so much football talent has produced FAR fewer national titles in the modern era than say Florida, I would hear that argument. But to say we should stand alone against the tide is to be more delusional about our pull and place in the state than an Aggie would be. Hell even Texas's smashmouth coach is having trouble getting Texas boys to buy in, and he coached in a BCS bowl and has had many NFL picks. Charlie had to raid a group of second-tier Florida players last NSD for a reason, the raw materials he needs are not in Texas or if they are they would most often rather play for a Sumlin who will cater to them.

Ignorance is bliss sometimes. Auburn plays smashmouth football. Auburn also does not run a spread like most people think. Spreads are signified by a team's willingness to go 4-5 a great majority of the time(A&M and Wash St.). Auburn's base offense is a 3 wide set. Also spreads typically have larger splits along the O-line. Auburn doesn't do that. If you want to know what Auburn actually runs, it's a wing-t. It's an offense that's been in existence for over 60 years now. A book detailing what Malzahn runs was written in the 70's called "the Delaware Wing T: An Order of Football".
Here's an excerpt from the book about our offense...
The objective of offense in football is, of course, to move the ball and score; but every coach is confronted with the question, “How can this be done most efficiently?” The conception of any football system must begin with deciding whether the attack will be primarily running or passing. Certainly, every offense must create a balance between running and passing, but because of limited practice time, the design must favor one phase.
The Delaware offense is primarily a running attack for the following reasons:
The core of any football team is hardness and as there is no separation of offense from defense, the style of offense affects the defense. The development of a gruelling consistent ground game builds a desire to dominate the opponent physically.

I get what you're saying, but that's insane. Imagine if any other field, athletic or academic, had that mentality - "Well that's how they did it in high school, so we better do it the same way to get them here and keep them happy."

Sumlin is averaging 9 wins per year. That's with Sherman leaving quality starters and nothing behind them. Sherman mailed in his last few recruiting classes, especially on defense.
Sumlin coached the second youngest team (Tennessee) in the SEC last year to 8 wins. Same as auburn who was a favorite to win the conference.
That was with a QB change mid season between two first time starters in a QB centric offense.
Aggies aren't worried about this season at all.

7 on 7 has changed HS and college football, especially in Texas. There aren't too many coaches left who play smash mouth football.

That is a bad comparison as those fields don't have the same NCAA restrictions put on their time. When I worked for a prof in college the labor laws were the only limits. College coaches have all of their contact with players regulated and measured. It really put Michigan back a few years when the NCAA dropped the hammer on them for trying to get around those rules, I don't want A&M to go down that road.
And no academic student pulls in the revenue that a football player does. The top ones are worth more and they get catered to. That is reality.

And trolling aside, this is it. We are tailoring our system to what our talent base is doing in HS. It would be an awkward fit with all the skill position talent in TX.

You make good points, and ftr I agree with the gist of what you're saying. That being said, I do think y'all need to become at least physical enough to develop a consistent running game, quarterback scrambles notwithstanding, in order to compete for conference titles.
"Smashmouth" may not be the correct term, but a ground game is vital.
