Does your school have any cool, open to the public, water spots near town?
Including cliff jumping, rope swinging, drinking, or anything else fun.
I know all Oxford really has is Sardis Lake, which is like a mud/clay/sand beach we go mudding, tailgate, and get drunk at.
I've also been to lake Nicol in Tuscaloosa. It was a great time. Lots kids drinking and cliff jumping.
I'd love to hit some cool river or lake spots on a few road trips this fall, whatchya got?

LSU has the LSU (University) lakes. Some pretty nice spots to post up and drink at. Sorority row is on these lakes so it is the basically on campus.
You can rent kayaks from LSU also.
There's running paths around it that range from 4 miles to 11 miles based off what route you take. A ton of good "people watching"...
And you can see Tiger Stadium in the background of this one to show you just how close it is to everything...
And while it's not a nice beach at all, there is the Baton Rouge Beach on the lake... Not for getting in the water. I wouldn't do that at all, but it has picnic tables and parking around it. I've had a BBQ picnic out there on the beach before.

there are several large lakes within 30 min of Knoxville. There are also several mountain rivers close where people float, kayak, fly fish, etc

We have Lake Bryan near CS. There is a campground, ice house, and you can get ont he water, but its a little gross. Lake Sommerville is maybe 40 min away. A little bigger and better, but still nothing too great.

How did LSU get God to put their colors in the sky above the lake?

Lake of the Ozarks is less than an hour away from Columbia.

I lived on the LSU Lakes for the first 24 years of my life... It is truly unbelievable the sunsets that happen above those lakes.

There are three rivers that converge in Columbia, and the campus is within walking distance to a very large greenway that follows the riverbed. Kids would also float the river on tubes and stuff during the weekend. I also spent a lot of time at The Rocks; right near the zoo (10-15 minutes) there's a large outcrop of massive boulders in the river where kids just drink and relax.
Lake Murray is only 20 minutes away from downtown Cola, and certainly a lot of fun if you know someone who has access to a boat.
I'd do pictures, but I'm lazy.

Chattanooga and Knoxville have the Tennessee River, it's tributaries, lakes, and various other mountain streams and creeks.

Most of the beauty in our sunsets come from the different colors reflecting off clouds. The fact that our climate tends to have tons of afternoon clouds really helps give our sunsets a lot of different colors.
Certainly not saying they are the best in the world or anything, but South Louisiana is known for beautiful sunsets.
