Mods feel free to delete my too quick on the draw clicking in the other thread I started. Also feel free feel to OT if necessary but I feel like more folks will see it here. Kinda SEC because students are often taken there to see what a Greek Orthodox Church and that includes student-athletes looks like operates.
But recently, Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church burnt to the ground. It's been in Knoxville for many, many decades and is a major part of he community. They open their doors every year for Greek Fest and it's a highlight from many outsiders. Personally, I've been to services several times tho I'm not Greek Orthodox.
The fire happened on Greek Orthodox Easter which is just a kick to the gut and here's what it looks like inside:
What's not pictured are the Italian tiles, Amazing Frescoes, irreplaceable icons and of course the amazing fresco/dome they had. It will take a lot to get it back to normal and replacing some things will be costly but as they always are. Every little bit will help and if you have even a 5 bucks please consider this - they are a worthy cause and a minority in the region despite being here going on 40 years.
Like I said I'm not a parishioner but these are amazing folks and no one deserves to have this happen on Easter. It's painful to know that some religious artifacts have been lost.
If you can help at all please do. 1 dollar, 5, up into the k's all help.

I RA'd for a sticky.
If it were just for a day or two it'd be a good thing to do.

Thanks you so much! The community is outnumbered but very involved in Knoxville and very vibrant. They need our help imo, especially because they don't have the protestant resources or the deep catholic pocket to lean on. I've known an entire family since HS and can say they're one of the most awesome families I've ever met.

There's always someone and that's ok. But I honestly wouldn't bother bring this here if I wouldn't vouch for them. I'm not even a member but they are truly great people.

I hope not. These are good folks and atheists should be able to put that aside. We're not talking certain varieties of Christianity and religion in general that are dicks. However, these folks, especially members of this congregation are great people.

Ranters are good people and that's all I got to say (for once).

Man that's horrible. I went to a couple of Greek Festivals there. The church was really neat (and I loved the food obviously).

Orthodox churches have some really cool art. I know the Russian ones around here do.

Absolutely and along with frescoes and roman tiles and of course, mosaics. He's what the community lost (Just a smapleing as so far it sounds a lot worse).
I think this one must be a UT show of suppert cuz Greeksfest + everyone is a fan:

Others:

IIRC they only recently added lighting to the dome mosaics but it never needed it. Could be wrong tho and most of it could be natural,
Then there's the wo0d on Gold icons general damn. SMH. What a damn shame! Centuries of icons gone up in smoke.

Tis the nature of the rant - the sad, sad, nature.

Don't take it personal, but some may have had bad dealings with other churches and be a little disgruntled towards organized religion in general. Never know what someone has had to deal with. That said, sorry to heat about this. Have an upvote!
FWIW, i think this info needs to get to the right people in the community and the donations will take off.

As an atheist, I am saddened by this news and will donate.
Thanks for bringing this to the board.
Though I do not "believe", I will wish God's peace and blessings on these folks (since they DO believe)

A couple things:
-So sorry to hear and see this. Best wishes for all involved.
-Downvotes dont mean shite.
-maybe put on OT lounge (not sec ot). Those clowns really are good people as well and come together when something matters more then what a girls arse looks like after she gained 10 pounds
-be prepared for a whack. religion threads dont usually fly on td.com because of the controversy it brings. Not everyone thinks saban is god and bama football is the second coming.
