quote:Their proposals are to increase the deficit substantially, not only above baseline, but they were even significantly above Kamala’s. So they can say or not say whatever they want, but admin and their GOP allies in congress have laid out proposals that show a large increase in the deficit.
Lies. Ive never heard once the administration state this is their plan.
quote:This is obviously never going to happen unless they commit to both large tax increases and large spending decreases. Very few, if any, are even willing to pretend that they’ll do both, and even fewer would ever do it. So if you believe anyone who advocates for a balanced budget isn’t willing to do what is necessary, then you clearly rather base reality on dishonest fantasies, than even an honest fantasy, let alone an honest reality.
The President has said hed sign a balanced budget bill. There is a GOP majority Congress...I wonder why this hasnt happened

This kind of thinking is why we are 37 trillion in debt.

quote:It may be a bad model, but right now the plan is to retain the worst of the model and expand it (large deficit expansion) and somehow make it even worse (tariffs). So even if we don’t know how to fix it, trying things that we know are going to only make it worse doesn’t somehow make sense because they’re doing “something.” That’s the same logic progressives use.
If the current model(print money, distribute it, and buy everything from overseas) is so great, why were we wrecked by inflation and why are we at unsustainable levels of debt? Why would we assume that this can be maintained forever?

Maybe he didn’t mean it, but his reaction yesterday seems to suggest otherwise. Plus there is a chance the Browns verified that before picking him.
He's working behind the scenes to get this thing straightened out.

The fact that Travis Hunter somehow made it out of Boulder extremely likeable and mature impresses me even more about him.
re: NFL Draft: Rounds 4 to 7 Today
Posted by buckeye_vol on 4/25/25 at 12:54 am
26 of the 32 draft picks came from either the SEC (15) or Big Ten (11). Looking back at 2024, if we group them by the new conferences after the 2025 realignment, it was 25 of 32 from either the SEC (14) or the Big 10 (11). So the current SEC schools had 29 picks in last 2 drafts, while the current Big 10 schools had 22, for a combined 51 compared to 13 for every other team in college football combined.

quote:This is obviously absurd because throwing the game is not the way to get more money (unless they’re arguing he bet against Tennessee or something). Not to mention, while he obviously didn’t have a good passing game, but between the pressure and coverage, he didn’t have much a chance to have a good one. And he did make the best out of nothing a few times with his legs, despite taking some hard hits, so that’s not really what I would expect if someone was throwing the game.
Seems like he’s poking fun at how absurd the idea that he threw the playoff game is, doesn’t seem too bad.
That being said, I have yet to see it someone accuse him of throwing the game, so I doubt this was much more of some dumb, random fans. But I did see a lot of valid criticisms over and over.
So it might be a bit telling that he decided to actually make some comments, and only focused on likely the small minority of dumb criticisms, and ignored the vast majority of valid criticisms. Just feels like it’s related to the broader issue of not taking any accountability, and pretending that this was all Tennessee’s fault. He didn’t want more money; all he wanted was Tennessee to bring in more offensive lineman and receivers, but it was also because it was Heupel’s offense that was the problem all along.
So apparently all he wanted Tennessee to bring in those offensive lineman and receivers for the next QB to run the problematic offense. :dunno: But the offense must not have been too problematic when he committed, when they were explosive. It also must not have been too problematic his first season, despite getting much worse with a QB that had accuracy issues. But it is problematic when he had some accuracy issues apparently.
re: Nico harrison's baseline mantra of "defense wins championships"
Posted by buckeye_vol on 4/18/25 at 1:56 am
quote:I just had ChatGPT look this up, but it seems accurate. Anyways, of the last 25 NBA champions, 22 were in the top 10 one offense and 23 were in the top 10 on defense. 14 were in the top 5 on offense and 17 were in the top 10 on defense. And the average offensive ranking was 5.84 while the average defensive rating was 4.88.
He's not entirely misguided. I saw a stat recently that said that 22 of the last 25 NBA champions were top ten in defensive rating at the end of the regular season,
So based on these, unsurprisingly NBA champions are great on both ends, and both are obviously extremely important. And these my support defense being MORE important slightly, but it’s clear that with rare exceptions like the 2004 pistons (18th offense, 2nd defense) and the 2022 Warriors (17th offense, 1st defense), it’s pretty clear the defense was carrying the team, but similarly you have the rare exceptions where it’s the offense, like the 2001 Lakers (2nd offense, 21st defense).
That said, I wonder if even the little discrepancy in the two is overstated because a couple years ago, I saw an NBA metrics account discuss the difference in them the variability between offensive ratings and defensive rating. And there are is much more variability in offensive ratings. So the difference between a top offense vs. an average offense is much higher than defense. His argument was that made offense more important. It sounds reasonable, but I could see the argument that means defense is more consistent/reliable, so that is important.
In addition, I wonder if there might be a little more discrepancy here because these are the top teams, who are more likely to protect big leads while their opponents are going to have to be more desperate on offense to comeback. So it’s possible that this results in lower offensive efficiency for both teams on average as the leading team tries to maximize position time at the expense of efficiency, while the trailing team is just taking more inefficient shots. Now this likely wouldn’t have a huge impact, but given it would help their defensive efficiency but just hurt their offensive efficiency, and there is a pretty small difference overall between the two, small changes especially in opposite directions might explain a lot of the small difference.
And if ChatGPT is correct, then while the overall correlation between the two across the league was about -0.1 (accounting for 1% of the variance, it was -0.3 (accounting for 9% of the variance) for the NBA champions that would lend support that some of the difference might be unique to being one of the better teams. Maybe I’ll have to look to see if this relationship gets stronger the further you get from the average.
Overall, the idea that defense is important to championships was obviously true and this supports that. But so is offense, and at best the difference is small, and good chance they’re nearly negligible. But based on what Nico did and what he’s arguing, he seems to have taken something that was true (defense is important) and took it to such an extreme that it’s quite a bit further from the truth than he thought, if not outright false if thought that building a great defense was worth it no matter how much it negatively impacted the offense.
re: Is 30% of gross income still a good benchmark for what to pay in rent?
Posted by buckeye_vol on 4/17/25 at 4:51 am
quote:I cannot come up with a scenario where 30% of gross is 50% of net, unless someone is a high earner has a high effective tax rate, in which case, they have much more discretionary income to spare.
30% of gross probably lands you 50% of take home. That’s not leaving much wiggle unless you have a high income.
For example, let’s say someone is single and makes $60k, puts 3% towards 401k match ($1,800), and $6k towards pre-tax insurance premiums, HSA, etc. So 7.65% of the $54,000 (after the pre-tax premiums, HSA, are deducted), which is $4,131 with go to payroll taxes, and his AGI for income taxes will be $52,200. With just the standard deduction and no other deductions or credits, the federal income taxes will he $4,280.
So altogether that a total of $16,211 subtracted from his gross, leaving him with $43,789, or ~73% of his income. So 30% of the gross ($18k) would be ~41% of his net. And even if there are state/local income taxes, those aren’t going to come anywhere close to the $7,789 to get 30% of gross to be 50% of net.
And by my quick math, he could triple his income to $180k and excluding any state/local income taxes, 30% of his gross is still only ~43% of net. And he could still make an additional nearly $44k before he makes a pretty but jump to the 32% tax bracket, but he’s already maxed his social security contribution so that should offset. Hell getting to $500k gross puts him at 46%.

re: Tesla tanking
Posted by buckeye_vol on 3/12/25 at 3:39 pm
For years, I've felt that while Tesla's valuations didn't make any sense, I was still bullish on the company itself. In other words, maybe it was overvalued, but the outlook was still quite positive.
But the last year or so, has completely changed my view, due to a combination of the market headwinds (less demand for electric) and honestly absolutely befuddling decisions starting with the cyber truck.
I personally think every other Tesla model is sharp, and I've thought about buying one. And I'm kind of the target demo for one. Yet, despite my kids thinking it's really cool, if someone was giving me a free vehicle, the Cyber Truck would be near the bottom of my list, and I can't think of a vehicle I would put below it. It's so damn ugly, and I usually don't really care that much about it.
And I don't know who the target demo is for one, because the 2 people I know with one, a guy my neighborhood and my friend from high school, what they have in common is that they've owned other Teslas, and I would be surprised to see them with a normal pickup truck. And besides my kid and those who own one, everyone I've talked to has agreed when I said it's ugly as hell.
This may not have been as big of a deal if they were releasing other new models, and maybe targeting a new demographic, but there has been nothing.
But what really made me bearish is when he was making employment cuts and basically told all heads of divisions/departments to make blanket cuts. Specifically supercharging stations are probably the area where they have the biggest advantage and biggest advantage moving forward. Yet, when the head of that division came back and said she can't make those cuts, Elon just fired her AND THE ENTIRE SUPERCHARGER division.
Some were eventually rehired, but this it what made me really question whether Musk was actually a good CEO at all. If he was in the past, then he wasn't acting like one now. And then they're whole robo taxi and robot exhibition only validated that point, because that was just baffling.

re: Inflation rate drops for Feb

quote:Am I missing something? January's month over month inflation rate was 0.47% while February's was 0.22%, and year over year, January's increase to 2.99% from 2.87% while February's decreased to 2.81%.
Is there a reason the media is stating this is a “cool” report, even though it’s the same reading as the “hot” (their words) January report?
Obviously month to month data are volatile and year over year data are susceptible to base effects, but compared to January, February was "cooler," and it was cooler than any other February reading month over month since 2020 at the start of the pandemic.

Like maybe you’re just trolling, so you’re committed to a bit even when you have to feign ignorance, but maybe it’s ok to break character when it comes to that.
Because clearly in this case, if the other players were averaging 20 PPG and he was in averaging single digits, not only would you be like “look how much worse he does than those guys in the G league,” you would be correct to argue that. But you can’t dismiss the comparison, when it’s inconvenient, just because it’s the G league. It’s relevant and actually useful data for this specific argument.

I mean I’ve never seen an NFL offensive line get so throughly dominated, without ever facing a single blitz. I don’t know how any QB could perform well in that situation because he’s getting pressured like they’re blitzing like crazy, but they’re actually dropping 7 into coverage.
