Both coaches are better suited to the college player.

Watching Auburn fans pretend to speak with authority about basketball is literally the funniest thing I've ever seen on a sports message board. This is a fanbase that outside of two seasons at the turn of the century has treated it's basketball program as if it didn't even exist. It's been 15 years since your average Auburn fan could name more than 2 players on their basketball team yet they all of a sudden know what does and doesn't constitute a good basketball hire. LMFAO

You could always add something to the conversation, since you don't think anyone else knows anything?

John Wooden only made the tourney twice in his first six years. It took him 14 years to make the final four and he's without question the best CBB coach of all time
Are you comparing getting to the tournament then to getting to it now? There was only like 8 teams invited back then. There are 68 now. 68. I hate that Grant didn't get the job done, but he didnt. 6 years is long enough. I can tell it was a good move because our rivals think it wasn't

Pretty spot on.
What you're seeing is a bunch of people who were convinced they had finally grabbed the upperhand in basketball watch it get snatched right back from them. If we had hired Gregg Marshall, they'd be doing the same thing with different angles. Mid-Major, will leave in 3 years, blah blah blah. In Psychological terms - they're dissembling.
Bottom line is that Auburn basketball is and pretty much always has been in the bottom third of the conference, and they've done nothing to change that other than have a blacklisted coach fall into their laps... and proceed to have a sub-.500 season for the 6th consecutive year.
Auburn fans have no authority or business passing judgment on the quality of our basketball program or coaching hires. Yet, for some strange reason, they've found their way into all of our basketball threads in droves.

I really do think there are a lot of good Auburn posters on this board but you guys take the cake with the condescending way you're telling Bama fans we shouldn't be excited about the hire. Up until this year and outside of a short span of time from about the Fall of 1998 thru 2000 March Madness you guys basically ignored Auburn basketball. You have every right to your opinion it's just funny seeing Auburn fans lecture Alabama fans about basketball as if you guys are authorities on the sport...lol

Anyone can have an opinion. I don't know why that bothers you so much. There have been several Auburn fans that thought it was a good hire. You've been on a one man mission to prove that to everyone based on some tweets you've posted.

What's wrong with the hire? It's a pretty good hire IMO.

You're a moron. Being an Auburn fan has nothing to do with what someone thinks about a hire.
So If an Auburn fan says it was a good hire he is wrong because he is an auburn fan?

I've been on the Rant all night enjoying the banter and discussion.
I'm certainly not going to agree with the individuals suggesting it's a bad hire, so I guess you're right.
Anyone who is being intellectually honest with themselves, without team biases, would have a hard time calling this a "bad hire" if looking at the needs that Alabama had that were met by it.

I don't see a ton of Auburn fans calling it a bad hire. I think it's a good hire with the possibility of being a homerun. There are too many questions at this point to call it a homerun.

But honestly what reason do you have to be excited for Johnson other than he was in the NBA and you recognize his name? He had two good years with a loaded roster and one of the best big men ever, but was god awful with Nets. You have literally no idea what to expect from him in college.

Is that what I said? Did I say you people were wrong because you were Auburn fans?
Or did I say you folks don't have any authority to pass judgment on the hire - due to your program's inability to produce a quality basketball team more than once a decade?
Essentially, your opinion on the hire doesn't hold any water for this reason:
Your entire fanbase didn't acknowledge that basketball was even a sport until you hired Bruce Pearl, and you've finished with 6 consecutive losing seasons. You folks don't know or care anything about basketball because you've never been good at it enough to care for it. Bama is the butt of that joke frequently, but it's genuinely true with Auburn. Nobody cared about basketball in Auburn until Bruce Pearl showed up. So what do you know about the quality of a basketball hire?
You guys have just gotten all in a tizzy because Pearl showed up, somehow managed to lose to the coach we just fired - not once, but twice in the same year - and we just hired someone who will be a huge splash in the media and on the recruiting front.
That's literally the only reason you guys care.
There's nothing really wrong with that, and I get it... but it is what it is.

Wait, I love the NBA and College basketball regardless of how good my team is. I know and care about basketball. You are trying way too hard.

You would be an incredible exception to the general rule. And I'm sure you can agree with that.
