good coach with a lack of talent doesn't produce elite numbers
One thing the article postulated with which I (and most of us) agree is that A&M's defense shouldn't have to produce elite numbers.
Elite numbers are great but they're not winning ballgames. Producing elite numbers at LSU and not winning ballgames is why Chavis is no longer there.
In 2013 A&M was 18 points away from going 11-1 and winning the SEC West. Shave 7 points per game (turn one touchdown drive into a punt) and this would have been the case.
2014 was worse: we needed to shave 11 points per game to go 11-1 and win the West. (10 points per game to take those 3 losses to overtime).
No one is looking for elite defensive numbers here. (Though we'd certainly take them, and hope to be getting them in the future). In 2015 if we, per game, can turn one TD into a punt (or turnover) and another into a field goal then we'll do better than any of us expect.

I'm not expecting a miracle from Chavis, but I am expecting to win a game or two that we would otherwise lose without a decent Defense. Can Tiger fans at least agree that that is reasonable?

sure. but those wins will be negated by losses in the final 2 minutes when Chavis gets all prevent retarded

Did LSU win the SEC with Chavis? I honestly don't know.

A&M’s 2015 ceiling is considerably higher than LSU’s, largely because the Aggies have so much room to grow on both sides of the ball.
This statement doesn't make sense to me. A ceiling is a fixed point. A&M's ceiling isn't higher than anybody - it's on the same level as most. A&M does have more room to grow due to its bad 2014 showing. The potential improvement is greater.
I noticed that, too. I have to concur.

LSU rustles your jimmies, we know. You don't have to pay us tribute in every one of your posts.

As with any article or opinion, you can draw up as many positives and negatives as you want and of course whatever side is best for the person reading is the side that will be touted.
Common sense tells Chavis that his defense will feel less pressure if the offense scores more points. Sure. But, and I'm sure he knows this I'd assume, it isn't that cut and dry. A quick scoring offense or one setup to score quickly can also put a lot pressure on the defense with 3 and outs, not using a lot of TOP, etc. I get that A&M fans aren't expecting a top 10 defense. I'm just saying. If he is truly getting frustrated by the offensive performance, he'll have his moments to deal with at A&M as well. Overall, its a better situation offensively though obviously.
It will be interesting to see how Chavis uses his scheme at A&M. Myles Garrett is a fantastic talent, but Chavis had some fantastic and talened DEs at LSU that just couldn't get consistent pressure. Was it players or coaching? I guess we'll see. LSU just didn't sack the QB while Chavis was here much at all.
The biggest thing I'd be concerned with as an A&M fan would be press coverage with CBs and relying on them A LOT. Well, until the game is close and then suddenly deciding to play off of the ball and allow 10 yard pass after 10 yard pass. A&M just doesn't have the secondary talent or depth yet to rely on its CBs to cover that extra 1-2 seconds if the QB isn't feeling pressure.
It will be fun to follow.

The talent level at CB is my biggest concern with his scheme. We need to get deeper at CB for me to feel really confident about where our defense is headed
Overall I think we expect some improvement just based on the scheme. Everything that has been said about Snyder was that assignments were so complicated and nuanced that players were thinking far too much instead of just reacting. It was obvious to a lot of us because all 11 heads seemed like they were turned looking at the sideline pre snap on every play.

You don't have to worry about this with Chavis. His scheme is very basic. All his scheme requires to be successful is the players executing. The Mike and the DEs are the only ones that have to make a lot of reads. The question now is how long will it take aTm to get the talent Chavis needs to field a good D.
What will be interesting is how will Myles Garrett do in Chavis' system. His scheme isn't known to produce a ton of sacks and he's a bit of a pass rush specialist isn't he? He's going to have to develop into a complete DE to be successful.

I think we have the talent up front and at safety. Linebacker and CB are where we need to get deeper- I think we have a couple of guys with a lot of potential in Alaka and Walker at LB but we need depth and they need to prove it over the course of an entire year

You mean the same TCU that hasn't recruiting a top 25 class since the internet has kept track of that sort of thing?
What you say can't be true because talent makes coaches. Coaches don't make talent.

One of aTm's corners better step up big time. LSU had at least one lockdown corner every year that Chavis was here. That's one of the things that makes his defense go.

he relies so heavily on man defense by the CBs and for the ends to contain.
i'd assume this year he tries to shift to a more aggressive DL approach since aTm doesn't have the CBs to lock guys down.
