So you're saying that the majority of the members have zero ties to them. That's my point.

Valley/JSU people are not going to vote based on school loyalties on something this big. These people are appointed for 12 year terms (which is too long in my opinion). Dan knew the rules when he took the job. He knew the rules when was VC at UMC. IHL doesn't rubber stamp everything that comes their way - but, it's not based on school loyalties. To think otherwise is just foolish.

We need to have our own Board of Trustees.

I didn't say it was. I didn't even say I disagree with their decision. I'm not even saying that the IHL doesn't have it's own useful place in overseeing the state's schools. Approving real estate purchases, audits, financial oversight, etc.. are all fine by me.
I just think it's ignorant to have non ole miss people deciding what's best for the university when it comes to naming the Chancellor. That'd be like if congress had the right to elect a governor of their choosing when one governor's term was up.
I get it's the law/rules/policy/whatever but I just think it's busted.

We need to find a way to go private. Gets rid of our IHL issue and the Ayers bullshite.
Yes I realize this won't ever happen

God I hate the IHL.
Seriously, when people here laugh about our laughably high admissions rates and high drop out rates, blame this institution right here. They want anyone with a pulse to be accepted and inevitably flunk out. It's ridiculous. Us, Southern, and State need to come together to take down these bastards since they have no intentions of us being an institution of higher learning if they can help it.
And Phil Bryant can frick off. He hasn't stepped foot in an Ole Miss classroom.

I think anyone with half a brain could read the article and come away with "they are serious" or it wouldn't have made news. Whether they go through with it may or may not happen but it sounds serious enough. If you step outside the box from defending your team and try to look at it with a nonbiased view you would come away with the same perception.

Of course Ole Miss wants its own board, but given the limits on state funding, it does make some sense to coordinate the universities. And Ole Miss belongs to the people of Mississippi, even non-alums. Taxpayers provide support to the instiution and have an interest, hopefully for the best interest, of an important educational institution that affects all Mississippians.
It might make sense for day to day governance and operations to be under the oversight of a board for Ole Miss and similarly for the other two major schools, but with one "super" board that coordinates on major issues like state funding and programs.
It probably would also be best for UMMC to be independent of the Oxford campus and governed separately. They function pretty separately now as it is.

I don't think any donor base should hold the university hostage, but it is what it is.
Ole Miss seems to be attracting better quality students, and they're throwing up new facilities left and right. I've always like colonel reb, but something had to give on that end. It was inevitable.
I don't know much about UMCC's situation, but it sounds like he handled it as well as possible. From an outsider letting him go seems a bit irrational and uncalled for.
The "elephant in the room" is that there wouldn't be so much outcry if he wasn't fresh out of chemo

This is honestly something that LSU has at least put on the table, because Jindal's cuts on higher education would send LSU back to 90's prestige

Actually a very small portion of the Ole Miss budget is provided by the state (I think less than 20%). If Ole Miss went private it could make up for the lost revenue by raising tuition. Tuition is so low right now you could probably quadruple it and it would still be affordable.
In my opinion, giving up state funding to cut ties with a backwards state that makes boneheaded decision after boneheaded decision in regards to education is worth it. Getting a fricking 16 on your ACT should cause you to feel like the moron you are and not reward you with higher education you are unqualified to comprehend.
Also, IHL has been fricking Delta State for years.

Good idea. We should start the appraisal process right now on the physical plant and all properties and y'all buy the dang thing. Excellent idea. Y'all giving up the medical center? They get a $200,000 every year from the state. Oh, we (the state) built all of those buildings, too.
