on this day in WWII 1942, The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as "The Great Los Angeles Air Raid" took place. Reported sightings went out of a rumored Jap enemy attack on LA, and anti-aircraft artillery went into full barrage late 24 February into early 25 February over Los Angeles, California. Firing went on for a while during the night, obviously scaring people immensely. This was only 3 months after Pearl Harbor and people were twitchy. Later the Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox called it a “false alarm” and In 1983, investigations attributed the event to a case of “war nerves” likely triggered by a lost weather balloon.

Clearly a Gov't coverup, as this was the initial beginnings of the invasion and what led to Area 51.

Any time a weather balloon is involved... Code for alien coverup

Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

There is evidence that suggests we experienced 20th century alien contact. In 1942, the Battle of Los Angeles involved the US military and Air Defense allegedly fighting a UFO. WWII Allied Air Force planes were buzzed by balls of light that some think could have been extraterrestrial. And the alleged crash of a flying saucer in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 propelled the world into the age of UFOs. For decades, some people have been searching for the sounds of extraterrestrial intelligence, while others have been sending messages out into deep space. What would happen if aliens answered… or came calling? What protocols exist to determine who would speak on behalf of mankind, and how might we communicate? What happens if they return? Some believe they already have.

There are protocols on how to respond...did anyone else in the military get them or was it just me?
I thought it was pretty common knowledge how to respond to an extraterrestrial encounter.
Granted I found it all to be tongue-in-cheek, but sure, I've gotten 'em.

On February 23, 1942, a Japanese sub arrived at the Ellwood oil filed off the coast of Santa Barbara. The vessel briefly shelled some oil storage tanks onshore, but did little damage, and shortly thereafter sailed away.
