Should flinching on a pickoff without throwing the ball be outlawed in baseball?

Adds absolutely nothing to the game and slows the game down. At the very least, put a limit on how many times you can attempt to pickoff each at bat. If you do it more than 3 times in one at bat, the third time should be a balk.

It's an attempt to keep the runner closer at bay, I don't know how effective it is though.
It's baseball.

Nope
It is aggravating but it's a part of baseball. Keep the runner close without using up your arm.

They put a clock between pitches to speed the game up. Why shouldn't this be done?

Why does the game need to be sped up?
(But I'm a traditionalist)

Because the speed of the game is the main reason so many people find it boring and don't watch as many games. I love baseball but it can drag on forever sometimes when pitchers get in those "duels" with base runners. I wish home crowds would boo their own pitcher after about the 4th or 5th pickoff attempt.

It would slow the game. Would equate to more pick off attempts.

If a pitcher was doing it for every single base runner, it would get frustrating. But it is a good strategy against someone with a high percentage of steals I suppose. On a pick-off play, is a pitcher allowed to throw straight to second base on a runner stealing from first? I've always thought that would be hilarious. Generally when a base runner takes off, he has his head down in a charge and may not even notice.

I'm saying put a limit on how many pickoff attempts you can have each pitch. Not just the flinch. The flinch should be outlawed altogether.

Yes, I'm for anything that lengthens the game.

Yeah, I get that.
It was kind of a rhetorical question.
Part of what I personally love most about baseball is kickin back.
People need to slow down a little.

quote:That's not too terribly uncommon, but pitchers are taught to throw to first anyway even if the runner is caught stealing. Then they just run him down from between the bases.

Well at first he said flinch, then he changed it to pickoff attempts. If it's the latter, then yeah it's basically a free stolen base attempt.

No. I used to love to wear those bastards out making them dive back again and again.
I'd do it just to be a dick.

As long as the pitchers doesn't clinch when they flinch, then it should be alright. It should flinching without clinching. But if they clinch while flinching, then it's wrong....unless they wince while they clinch, then flinching is OK.....but flinching and clinching, without wincing. Well that's just cheating.....

Hey, why don't I just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? I just may! What'd ya say?

Can't pick to an unoccupied base. However, you can step off and throw to an unoccupied base.
