The 1990's and early 2000's were a pretty incredible time for the Alabama athletic department.

Allowing Houston Nutt and his cronies, aka "The Murray State Mafia" to operate within our program...then adding an outsider (Gus Malzahn) to the mix, though that did bring things to a head.

Alabama - Turning ourselves in to the NCAA for the Alabama basketball coach (who was a UT alum) that was soliciting $ from boosters to buy a recruit.

Should have found some stairs for him to fall up instead.

As an Arkansas fan, I don't even wanna go there. Our mistakes are legendary and I wouldn't even know where to begin.

you're just talking about recently. Arkansas has had some damn good head football coaches. broyles, ford, petrino and one other whose name I can't remember right now (ken hatfield). having to fire petrino was his fault, not the schools.

True. Broyles either ran off or fired a lot of good coaches but he also made a lot of wise decisions as well. Leaving the SWC was his most brilliant move IMO. Frank and Nolan both deserved a spanking for their fiasco. But I have have a lot of respect for them and have forgiven them both.

But giving Mike Shula enough time to turn things around. We were legit in 2005.

The 1990s were legit. In football, 4 SEC-W titles, 2 SEC titles, 1 National title. Men's basketball made 8 post season trips (5 NCAA, 3 NIT). Baseball made 3 trips to the CWS and won either the SEC regular season or tourney title 4 times, and women's basketball when to the NCAA tourney 8 times. Overall, it was one of the best decades in Alabama history.

As far as the 2000s, before Saban arrived?

Not making Erk Russell head coach.

I cannot overstate how huge a mistake this was. It is the difference in winning a NC in 1980 and apparently never again and winning multiple national championships. Erk is one the very best football coaches of all time and knowing he should have been our HC and where he would have taken this program and knowing our AD fricked him over and ran him off almost makes me want to cry.

Hiring Bill Curry over Bobby Bowden because we wanted Bowden to come in for a formal interview and it insulted him. He wanted the job and we blew it.

Not offering Saban or Henry whatever it would've taken to have them both finish their careers at LSU.

Hiring mistakes listed in this thread, unless setting schools into death-spirals for decades-plus(yeah you Tenn..nice to see you on way back), aren't the biggest strikeouts. All schools look for gems or stars to be made.

The biggest sin is when you know exactly what you have and are looking at in Best in the Biz, yet let them get away. There's no excuses!
