I too visited this establishment during this time. Nickel nights w/ the Simpletons. Got into a big fight one night and was never allowed back.

That was some serious rotgut in the drinks on nickel night. Anyone remember the penny pitchers of some beer-ish liquid at O'Malley's? I really don't want to know what that was. Something worse than Carling's Black Label, to be sure.

I went to Omallys with the track team gals on one of those all you can drink deals. It was great at first. Stunning handsome white dude surrounded by fit black gals on th dance floor. For some reason, that made me a magnet to white chicks even more than usual. I could do no wrong. Yet, I did. My last conscious thought was dancing with th tall redhead on the dance squad. She was the hottest redhead I have ever seen. Something must have gone wrong though as my next memory was laying in a huge puddle of orange juice vomit on the front porch of th first apartment on the left at Rivermill. My knees and elbows were bloody and laying next to me was a half naked gal who came to be known as Sasquatch. She wasn't a looker. In my defense, I was a Freshaman and I hadn't learned that screwdrivers were not a social drink. I also had to go see nurse Fran as Sasquatch apparently carries chlamydia...

Once the Starbucks took over Yudy's, the whole place went to shite.
And the closing of Barnett's News Stand was nail in the coffin of the "old" downtown.

Anyone remember The Atomic? Velvet Elvis? Lunchpaper?
Ratskeller?
Off the top of my head, the only places that were there 20 years ago (the 90's) that are still there today are-
Boars Head
40 Watt
Ga Theater
Georgia Bar
The Globe (barely squeaks in there)
East-West
The Grill
Nowhere Bar
Caledonia Lounge
Blue Sky (changed names to Walkers, then back to blue sky, they barely squeak in)
Hell, at this point the Starbucks is approaching 20 years. :(

Last Resort came back in the mid 90s, but that is more an eatery. Until then, Harry Bissets was the 'nicest' spot down town.

Road House, Georgia Bar, and Globe = "the BARmuda Triangle" - that was early 90's I know.
Anybody Remember Sky's? Rock Fish Palace - my band played that place a few times as well as the Downstairs.
Murphy's was the first bar that seemed like a real "bar" to me - other than the City Bar.
Went to a game last year and the Vibe at City Bar was unrecognizable from the old days - hip hop blasting ... sucked ...
Yeah = Barnett's closing was the end of an era for sure ...

Where TA's from new england and Atlantans and people who wear designer eye-glasses went to discuss current events and drink merlot......
I had an assigned group project in some class once, and one member suggested we meet there to plan our project.......
Cleanest bathrooms downtown if you ever found yourself in need of taking an emergency dump.

The Globe is primarily a grad school bar. The person who always wanted to go there in our group was from Augusta.

Can honestly say I've never been to the globe. Just never had any reason since other bars pour Guinness.

$2 Pitchers of Old Milwaukee......
He died jogging not too long ago. There was a thread about it on here, i think. He and Cracker used to play cards together or something. Can't remember.
