Any way you slice it, there's going to be uproar.

Better, all conference champs should be in.

They could do 8, but need to eliminate a cupcake week to keep the season at 15 games.

The so called 4 team playoff is set for 12 years I've read, but there in no way more teams aren't added way way sooner....like in 5 years soon. That way you get your 5 conference champs and 3 at larges.

Kill the conference championship games and go to 8 game playoff.

I would love that!
More football please!

Should be 6. Top 2 teams get a 'bye'.
When has the #7 team had an argument to be in the national championship game?

Any of these teams are capable of winning it this year.

It probably won't be next year, but I think it's very likely by 2016. This year, we'd be looking at:
1 Alabama
8 Michigan State (or Boise State, if a non-power team is guaranteed in)
4 TCU
5 Ohio State
3 Florida State
6 Baylor
2 Oregon
7 Mississippi State (the committee would rank this MSU over the other one if it mattered. 2 top 25 wins vs. 0)
That looks amazing. Granted, it won't always be this cut-and-dried. (If Michigan State gets in, the first team out is ... Ole Miss? Arizona?) But the #9 isn't going to get much sympathy like Ohio State and Baylor will.

8-team playoff with 5 conference champs getting in would actually kill the regular season. Georgia Tech would've gotten killed by UGA last week because they would've rested their starters for FSU. Jameis probably would've sat out the 2nd half vs Florida. Ohio St would still have Braxton Miller because he wouldn't have been in a meaningless game for the playoff discussion vs Michigan in the 4th quarter. 8 teams is just a terrible idea.

If #7 beats #2, #3, and #1 in successive weeks, no one is going to doubt that they deserve to be the final #1.

Better, all conference champs should be in.
The 2nd best team in one conference may be better than the champ of another.
And what do you do about the Big 12 that has no CCG and ND?

LSU didn't rest its starters at all in the 2011 SEC Championship game even though it was guaranteed to make the BCS Championship Game, win or lose.
There would still be seeding to play for, and if the first round is at home, that would be a really big deal to fall out of the top 4. Plus, fans are unlikely to accept teams blowing off rivalry games.

I don't think they should expand the playoff until every league has a conference championship game. That or any conferene with "co-champs" only gets one slot.

I support this

I still think if your going to take all 5 Conf champs (which you should) then 3 teams shouldnt get to stay home and rest a week as at large teams. Have the 2 best other 5 play for a spot and 4 at large teams play for 2 spots.
It's a default 16 team playoff then. ( you do have to use autonomy to grant the b10 a cCG , which they clearly need) first week in dec should be left for post season not reg season.
