Is vinegar on fries northern or southern?

I think it is northern because I see vinegar on tables in burger places up north but I can't be sure.

I keep a bottle of malt vinegar in the house at all times for when we do fish fry with thin cut potato chips. Also drench my fries in this stuff when I go to 5 guys.
