I guess the question is:

In the South if you screw over a kid in Memphis, does that follow you to a recruitment in Atlanta? Is there something connecting these south coaches across state borders and long distances?

Because here in Texas, the distance between Memphis and Atlanta is less than some of these high school coaches travel to for conventions. Words of your misdeeds spread through hundreds of miles and dozens of communities in one fell swoop.

I don't know, maybe that network exists in the south. It exists in Texas, and it means when things aren't "handled well" the penalty is severe.

Not unless it becomes your reputation over time, no.

States have their own networks the way Texas does, but generally those don't extend over state lines unless there is a connection or, like I said, the coach has a terribl reputation for it.

I am assuming that Mullen thought that this move would end up making the football team better overall. That's his job...to put out the best product he can. Sucks for Virgil...but I would be lying if I said I actually care.

Last minute? There's still two and a half months left in recruiting, and the kid has offers from some quality schools. When I first read the news I thought "How nice of Mullen to give the kid such early notice!" Now it turns out the kid and his coach got their feelings hurt?

I don't know any of the details, and if the kid passed up some chances to visit other schools then I understand why he's disappointed....but there is still plenty of time for him to find a good home.

He is upset that he is going to graduate early??? How does this hurt him? Is he going to shut down recruiting once he graduates?

I get it, he is graduating early so that he can enroll in the Spring. This means he needs to commit to another school by early January, instead of by the first of February. So he has 6 weeks instead of the full two and half months.

But that "16 days until graduation" is meaningless. AFAIK, his actual graduation date has no bearing on his recruitment.

So, let's say he decides not to enroll early anywhere, and lets his recruiting drag on until February. He still is not harmed in the least. He can enjoy the Spring and enroll in his new school in the Summer. He can probably still go to Prom.

I just don't see how working hard in school and graduating a semester early is something to whine about.

You're avoiding the key issues, but it's to be expected. The kid is better off not going to MSU if they don't want him. But this is one of those ugly stories of college recruiting that do not sound good. Dress it up however you'd like.

Actually, he has until December 19th. After that, you can't sign until NSD.

He can't sign, but he could go ahead and enroll in the school he intends to sign with...

I haven't tried to "dress it up" or even avoid the key issues, whatever those are. I don't know why MSU decided they didn't have room for him, and it really is disappointing for the kid if that's where he wanted to play. I just don't think the timing of this decision is as bad as the OP wants us to believe. There is stil plenty of time for him to find a Plan B.

And anyway, all indications are that MSU offered to let him Grey shirt, and he just doesn't want to wait another year to enroll. That's HIS choice.

Oh they offered him a grey shirt? Well this whole thing seems to be blown out of proportion... Grey shirt thats great news!. A highly recruited QB who shuts down his recruiting, can now pay for his first 3 semesters of out of state tuition to play for a coach who thought there were far more deserving players than him... I dont understand why he would be upset in the least.. Damn he should be thankful for the opportunity. He should call mullen and apologize for the inconvenience if he doesn't grey shirt. Otherwise it would be rude of him.

Your feelings hurt? Where is the link? Did freeze tell the kid to ee then pull scholy 16 days before graduation... Did hugh inform the coach and not the player and his family.. Must be the same thing.. Did freeze recruit him or was it the previous regime? Details man details

Some of which is a recruiting dead period, which means no chance for a few official visits. The kid will have to dartboard his future.

It sucks, there is no way to spin it this sucks for him. Sure he can still go somewhere else, and sure lots of other teams do it, but today the issue is MSU and this kid.

Y'all are better off rationalizing that y'all don't need Texas talent than try to convince us less than a month (when you take out the dead period) is enough time.

Every coach of a really good program will pull an offer for a kid because someone higher on the board committed at some point in their career. We don't always hear about it but this is not an isolated case.
