For fricks sake
Legal in NY to record a conversation as long as one participant in the conversation is aware it is being recorded.
This is truly unbelievable.

The New York State Division of Human Rights (DHR) has ruled that the Roman Catholic owners of an Albany-area farm violated the civil rights of a lesbian couple when they declined to host the couple’s same-sex “marriage” ceremony in 2012. Robert and Cynthia Gifford, who own and operate Liberty Ridge Farm in Schaghticoke, were ordered by DHR Judge Migdalia Pares and Commissioner Helen Diane Foster to pay $10,000 in fines to the state and an additional $3,000 in damages to the lesbian couple, Jennie McCarthy and Melissa Erwin for “mental pain and suffering.”
Additionally, the Giffords must provide sensitivity training to their staff, and prominently display a poster highlighting state anti-discrimination laws.
quote:
The Giffords’ attorney, Jim Trainor, told LifeSiteNews that the two-year-legal drama and resulting fines all stemmed from a single brief phone call in 2012 that caught his clients off guard.
“The entire interaction between the Complainants and the Giffords transpired during a two to three minute telephone conversation which, unknown to Mrs. Gifford, was being tape recorded,” Trainor said.
Legal in NY to record a conversation as long as one participant in the conversation is aware it is being recorded.
quote:
“They consider the farm their home,” Trainor said. “They live there, they work there, they raise their kids there.”
This is truly unbelievable.

The laws dictating this are the same ones that would punish them if they refused to allow interracial couples to be married on their land.
That doesn't mean I agree with this, but people need to stop acting like this is some "gay agenda".

I normally side libertarianly with you but I disagree whole heartedly.
Nobody is suing because they won't hold an interracial marriage. Name the last time somebody was sued for discriminating on race.
The gays could have told them "FU, you bigot" and taken their business elsewhere, but instead sued. It is an agenda.

Why aren't the owners' religious beliefs being protected? I'm all for gay marriage but this is pretty dumb. Sounds like this couple was just fishing for cash.

That law too is bullshite.
Why should you have to allow anyone to get married on your land?

Considering that they recorded the telephone conversation with the property owners, I'd say that is a fair assumption.

Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Interstate commerce and equal protection brah. You can discriminate in your business all you want but everything sold or existing on the premises better be made in the state you're in.

I'm no supporter (or opponent) of gay marriage, but this is correct.

I disagree here.
As someone in an interracial marriage, if someone had had an issue with the locale my wife and I had chosen for our wedding, we would have just flipped 'em off and found a different spot we liked.
Suing takes the focus off the marriage and makes it about making a statement. Justified or no, the fact that this couple is willing to go this route and allow something else to take precedent over what is supposed to be their day of wedded bliss does indeed take it into the "agenda" realm, in my book.

Religious beliefs dont absolve people from accommodation laws. Religious entities are protected, but not individuals. If you hold weddings on your private land, you must hold them for any couple legally allowed to marry in your state.
I think its bullshite, but that is the law and it isnt enforced just when it comes to gays.

I agree
My point was that this isnt unique to gay marriage. Public accommodation laws actually exist because it used to be damn near impossible for blacks to obtain certain public services in some areas. In 2014, I see them as unneccessary as the free market would weed out racist/sexist/etc business owners in a progressive society.

Because they operate a business that accommodates the public. New York allows gay marriages. They violated New York law by denying the lesbian couple the use of their farm, as they happily do for straight couples.

I'd be willing to bet this is what most non-militant gay people do as well.
I think the couple in question are idiots myself.

I think that people who accept discrimination, especially as legally egregious as this example, just promotes more discrimination.
Bigotry can be defeated only by continuous social pressure. Anti-discrimination laws are one form of this pressure.
