It's sad to see a once vibrant community, especially one as big as Gary, abandoned and in severe decline. The series Life After People has used settings in Gary as examples of what happens to buildings and communities when they're abandoned by people.

I was just about to say, every picture I have seen of Gary reminds of some post-apocalyptic, "Life After People" stuff.

Decline of the steel industry. So yes, government regulation, unions, etc.
In other words, democrats. Detroit and Gary are prime examples of the end result of liberal economic policies

I don't know they did ok with Starbucks. Other than that yea they're good at screwing up a good thing.
It's a cycle of things though... Towns and cities rise and fall for many reasons, usually success leads to greed and corruption eventually because people always want more. Or the industry of the area goes down due to new innovations and the people move away in search of better opportunity leaving behind the dregs of society who have no clue how to rebuild so you end up with a crime ridden, impoverished ghost town

Maybe you can resurrect the city by building a catfish farm there.

could grind up the current residents, and use them for food for the fish, I think you are on to something here.

I, along with HeartbreakTiger, have long suggested that poors should be processed into food for other poors.

Too cold to raise catfish up there there isn't a long enough growing season.
I like the cstfish feed idea though..high in protein and would be cheaper than using a soybean based feed

Yeah it was Steeltown, USA. Only a few of them are open now. If you take 80/94 to Chicago you can see the remains of like 20 steel mills as you go through Hammond/Gary.
The people dont act poor. There is two big casino boats about a mile from downtown Gary that use the same exit as downtown. They are always full and you KNOW no-one is going to either casino unless they are from Gary.

Sooo, what you're saying is, blame Obama.

Meant it more like, nobody would go downtown to a casino in Gary, unless they are from Gary.
Growing up there and knowing what a desolate wasteland it is. It's weird that many people fill up the casinos, considering it's probably one of the most poverty stricken places in the US.
It was that way before Obama, so I dont know who to blame.

You just described Tunica, MS as well

Tunica gets a lot of business from Memphis and Arkansas though to be fair.....
I've never been to Indiana, let alone Gary but it sure sounds like it's the Juarez, Mexico of America....... frick.
