If they leave early for the draft, then they forfeit those royalties and it goes into Hartman. The players that make the league are already forestalling financial compensation until they go pro. This would give them an incentive to complete their education and play for 4 full years.

Very much disagree with this part. That penalizes players for being good.

For example, it would be stupid for Gurley to come back next year. He can finish his degree later on, but he needs to start getting paid as a 1st round running back. He shouldn't be punished for that.

ETA: there is also no legal basis for that policy

I'll concede that. Give it to them once they go pro or graduate then. If they choose to go early, then they get the money early, too. Just for Christ's sake, give it to them.

I agree. And the university wouldn't donate their share of the players' jerseys if they went pro early so why should the players? They earned the school the money, they should keep their share if that's how it was being done.

I don't particularly like policies designed to push players to keep from entering the draft if they're ready to play in the league. I do think there should be better advice/education on which players would benefit from leaving early though.
