The Starkville Experience

I'll start off by saying congrats to MSU, they certainly are the better team this year. For all the whining about the officiating and easy points off of turnovers, the truth of the matter is that MSU had something to do with those turnovers and penalties happening and thoroughly earned the W.
On another note, Starkville was a pretty strange trip. The surrounding town on the way in made me think the whole campus was going to be pretty dumpy. Of course, that turned out not to be the case, and walking around campus was a solid experience. I also ended up reverse walking dog walk (on accident-alcohol might have been involved) with three of my friends and my GF as we tried to find a tailgate and somehow ended up having to walk 150 yards surrounded by screaming MSU fans on each side. It was both terrible and awesome at the same time. The fans were pretty accommodating to us, as I expected they would be, and we got to meet some pretty cool MSU folks.
Also, I will never complain about Auburn's downtown again. Bin 612 was ok, but there really just aren't many options. Get it together Starkville folks. I know there have to be enough students there to support a wider variety than that. Anyway, we had a good time overall (despite the loss). Here's to the bull dog fans that made it a worthwhile trip

Serious question.... I've played in a lot of tournaments on the msu campus fields, why does it smell so terrible there? Not a joke, smells like a giant septic tank

The area around the Bin is the Cotton District, not Downtown. You have to keep going down that main road to get to downtown..not sure if you did. But there are more bar options downtown. There are also other bars/clubs away from downtown (Ricks, Daves Darkhorse Tavern, Cowbells)
A lot of visiting fans think Starkville sucks with nightlife but it really doesn't..it's just annoyingly spread out instead of in one area like the square in Oxford. But most visitors won't know where else to go except the Cotton District unless they know someone who goes to MSU.

Starkville kind of exists as 2 entities. Starkville and State. The town has never really embrassed all those meddling kids hanging around. Kind of like going to your German grandparents. They do what the do because they are your kin but nothing more. The zoning laws get in the way of downtown really being great. The fact that you still have about the same amount of eating choices today as when I graduated in '93 really speaks to this. The Cotton District kind of stands as go between between school and city. Mississippi State's campus can hold its own against most other universities though.
That is where Oxford is drastically different. Oxford exists for Ole Miss. It is wholey dependent on the school for its existence.

Only bar worth in Starkville is Dave's for the late night pizza and gyros.

The good thing about Starkville is that it's really close to Tuscaloosa, so you have a party location once you are done with football for the day.

Starkville is a surprisingly fun trip. I had way more fun at Starkville than I have had at Gainesville and Ive been to both multiple times.

Don't know about all of that but I took the first shuttle over at 7:15 in the morning. Took another over at 10:00. Got on campus at 11:30. Ate really well at the tailgate. Walked over to the East side of Game Day and wished I hadn't. Came back and got caught up in the Dawg Walk. Went into the game and only had several beers before going in and that was a mistake because stupidly, forgot our ponchos so spent 3 days in wet clothes because CBS has 48 hours worth of commercials. At least had I been toasted, wouldn't have known it was raining.
I am glad we won though. Incredible game to win even though we kind of pooped the nest several ways.
All the Auburn people I talked to had a great time - but that was before the game.

Are you talking about the intramural fields? Those are right outside of South Farm, there is a two-house chicken farm right over the hill to the south, on the other hill are a few smaller chicken houses used for research by the Poultry Science Dept., there is also a lagoon on the far side of that hill to the south.

The Cotton District is nice, but it needs to be enlarged. Downtown needs a landmark type restaurant that is unique to Starkville that will draw visitors and get people to want to come downtown. One problem is that the demographics change so much during the summer time and businesses, such as, restaurants and bars struggle to make it. If Columbus were a little closer, Starkville would have a lot more traffic year-round.

I agree the CD needs to be expanded. After 1 only Cowbells is going so the options are limited. It is simply small, but the quality is there. Downtown last night seemed more crowded than when I was an undergrad at MSU. Cowbells' line took about an hour with their one in and one out policy.

There is a big arse chicken coop a half mile or so on South Farm. Also, those trees around the intramural fields stink as well. I work a couple hundred yards from the fields and the same smell hangs around occasionally.
