Also, I don't think any other SEC school has had a story like this, where someone was completely paralyzed from the neck down after an injury and died as a result.
Kentucky's Greg Page. He would've broken the color barrier in the SEC along with Nat Northington had he not gotten injured in practice the week before. FWIW, there are apartments on campus named after him. I'd like to see the upcoming football complex named after him if possible.
Kentucky is actually honoring him after the game tomorrow (along with three other UK players who were among the first black players in the SEC).

Very neat story.

Totally misread the title and was wondering how on Earth OM had 38 helmets.
On topic: Mullins is a part of OM lore and SEC lore and deserves the honor. The helmets are classy and a reminder that this game, even today, is one where one play can seriously injure, paralyze, or kill. Sure it's rare but that needs to be acknowledged.
Well done Ole Miss.

You're my favorite UT poster. Thanks for realizing what Chucky Mullins means to Ole Miss, and giving him the respect he deserves.

Yup. Page was from Middlesboro and after what happened Tennessee and UK played a basketball game at the High School there in order to fundraise for him and his family so they could pay for health care. Unfortunately, Page didn't make it.
It's past time for him to get more recognition. UK, UT, and Vandy all broke the color line rather quietly with various players but those players - some of them very, very good (Jackie Walker for example) - have been forgotten about and it's a damn shame. I guess being in the Upper South and not having near the controversy Deep South teams faced with regard to color kind of led to these trailblazers being forgotten.
UK's Greg Page deserves to be recognized so does UT's Walker along with others.

I am sure it means a lot to the 40+ segment of Ole Miss fans.
I was sitting in the student section when it happened. I will never forget it.

Thanks but honestly, Chucky is the one who earned it. I've got "It's Time" on my DVR and still haven't watched as I know I'll cry like a baby. Sports can take everything away when you least expect it and often in the strangest fashion.
I also know what this game cost Inky Johnson - one freak play completely paralyzed his arm completely in 2006 and the injury nearly killed him as strange as that sounds because it was devastating to his brachial system (veins and such). He as well as his doctors at UT hospital initially thought he was fine in terms of anything life threatening but after thinking the worst was over for the night he immediately had to go into emergency surgery when that issue was discovered. He's still paralyzed but he's very fortunate to have made it through.
Chucky and Brad are heroes in my book for how they handled adversity.

I can't speak with certainty, but I also doubt that these players are highly motivated to win a game because of Chucky Mullins' number. I would say the same thing about Alabama playing one for Bear Bryant or Derrick Thomas.
I see where you're coming from, but these players are all very aware of Chucky Mullins. There is a CM Award every year and the team is made very aware of the story - and what it stands for - not giving up.

What about every past player that has worn 38 since he died that will be at the game, the fans that were there when it happened or every player that has rubbed the statue before every home game?

I must say, there's a few clueless posters in this thread that really spewed a bunch of tasteless, ridiculous shite.
And color me shocked, they are state posters. Go frick yourselves.

If no one in this thread is over 40 I have serious concern for future of our country. How can anyone even joke or doubt the intention of this honor? Some sick fricking people out the.

Not just the 40+. To ALL Ole Miss fans.
I wasnt raised in MS or a OM fan. But I ended up being in MS when college time came around. Very shortly after being at OM I learned of him and everything he stood for. Mullins is a HUGE part of OM culture.
For those that have said he doesnt mean anything to the current players that a load of shite. The CM award is the greatest thing a current football player can win from the team and it means the world to them. And everyone that has worn/won it has deserved it.
I have the Its Time DVRed and still havent watched. Its gonna be what my wife and I do today before all the games get started.
