The Bulldogs fall to South Carolina, and the SEC's nicest coach adds to a legacy of inopportune loses

Sounds about right. He's the almost just there Coach.

This is completely true and would infuriate me if I was a Georgia fan.

"What makes Charlie Brown such a rich character is that he's not purely a loser. The self-loathing that causes him so much anguish is decidedly not self-effacement. Charlie Brown is optimistic enough to think he can earn a sense of of self-worth, and his willingness to do so by exposing himself to humiliations is the dramatic engine that drives the strip. The greatest of Charlie Brown's virtues is his resilience, which is to say his courage. Charlie Brown is ambitious. He manages the baseball team. He may be a loser, but he's, strangely, a leader at the same time. This makes his mood swings truly bipolar in their magnificence: he vacillates not between kinda happy and kinda unhappy, but between being a "hero" and being a "goat"." -Christopher Caldwell on Charlie Brown in an essay for The New York Times

My SO is a UGA grad and that is exactly how she describes CMR.

Here's a flashback that seems apropos to the weekend that was: Years ago, while trying to impress his wife, Mark Richt tumbled off a swing and injured his hip.
This was before he was hired as the head coach at the University of Georgia, and before Internet memes sprouted up to document his lack of competence; this was before Mark Richt became the Charlie Brown of college football's most competitive league, the Southeastern Conference, the kind of guy whom virtually everyone likes as a man yet no one respects as a competitor.
dayum, get him Rolling Stone.

Some other college football coaches known for always losing one they shouldn't:
Joe Paterno won first NC after 17th year with PSU
Bobby Bowden won first NC after 18th year with FSU
Tom Osborn won first NC after 22nd year with NEB
That's not bad company to be in. That whole "always loses one he shouldn't" pretty much applies to EVERY coach. The thing about Richt though, is that he's such a graceful loser, that you don't mind seeing him get beat.

Ouchy
Reading that's gotta hurt if you're a dawg fan.
And then there was that thread yesterday - about buying and selling - and now this quote:
I have, actually, always sorta liked Richt. He's just having a hard time overcoming Jaw Jah's dog curse.

... this is what Georgia does: They tantalize you with their potential, and then they crash amid a flood of irrational exuberance. They are, as a friend noted upon the Bulldogs' collapse Saturday evening, the closest thing college football has to a mortgage-backed security.

Auburn is 8-5 versus Richt. It worse to be Charlie Brown or have a losing record against him? ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconrolleyes.gif)

Richt is like Coach Tub, IMO. I am a huge Coach Tub fan. Most years each will win some huge games. Each year both will crap the bed a weekend or two. Richt is a solid HC. He just can't seem to put that Championship winning run together. I have always thought that Bobo was a bit over-rated as an OC. With Pruitt there, their D should improve as time goes by. Will Pruitt be enough to put them over the top? Only time will tell.

I didn't have time to read the whole post, but I read the article. I like Coach Richt, but the mentality I think he has allowed that whole program to settle for is the "there is more to college football than w's and l's."
That is true, but a program of Georgia's caliber is a little beyond that way of thinking don't you think? The "kids" in his program are grown men in a big time, big money, program.
The whole "moral program" thing is great for a team like Kansas, Indiana and Wake Forest, etc., but you are talking about a program that pays million upon millions of dollars to a man and his coaching staff to do one (or two) things:
Push your team to the highest level and WIN Championships.

Yep, his name should read, Mark Almost Richt.
I know they want to win, but the excuse I keep hearing from them is always the same, they're like, "Well who would we replace him with?" Seems to me this is a fear based reaction, instead demanding more from a HC at UGA. Maybe they're waiting for a perfect HC candidate to fall right into their lap. Personally, I think they (Disney dawgs included), are a prideful bunch, which would explain their defending Richt to no end. But the excuses are wearing thin, and they're growing more bitter by the season.
