Travis Gregory Stano says SEC should get 3 playoff teams

He said the SEC Champ will get in no matter what
He then went onto say if the SEC Champ is undefeated and beats an undefeated division champ in Atlanta, that team should get in too.
The example he gave was 12-0 Georgia beating 12-0 Texas A&M in the SEC Title Game. Both teams would get into the playoff.
Then he said what if another SEC team goes 11-1 and is lurking. Like Alabama whose only loss was Texas A&M, but beat LSU and Ole Miss on the road. No way does an 11-1 SEC team get left out.
He said in this scenario 3 teams get in. He doesn't see an undefeated team in the Big 10 or Big 12, and likely not in the Pac-12 either, so the Playoff would be Georgia, A&M, Alabama, Florida State.

None of those teams is going undefeated because they all play Auburn.

It was just the example Travis gave
The same scenario could work with Auburn if they beat Georgia in the regular season but Georgia beats them in Atlanta

This would be too incredible to believe if it were based on polls. With the new 13 member committee, you can let this one go.

I still think, fairly or not, they will try and put 4 conference champs in if they can justify it in any way.
The all SEC NCG drew bad ratings, and at the end of the day, that drives everything.
If 2 12-0 teams play in Atlanta, which could happen, doesn't that theoretically mean that the one who losses isn't NC good? They had a shot, and lost a neutral site game to someone else.
There is an absolute difference in losing in September vs. December to me.
Disclaimer: I am in no way condoning that OSU should sniff the playoff this year (even if they only lose 1 cause they looked awful), but I think MSU could get in if they only lose 1 (they have a "good" loss on the road across the country).
In the end, I think it is 4 conference champs if at all possible for $ purposes

I agree completely.

No, it means the the evidence suggests that the winner is the better team. Why can't you compare the loser to the teams competing for the remaining three slots?
quote:A minor difference to me. Teams should be getting better through the season. But there is way too much tendency to ignore early season losses. They count, too.

quote:Fair statement. I'm not sure what opportunities are left for the Big 10 to win against significant nonconference opponents..but if the conference finishes the way it looks right now, then losing to Oregon and then sweeping through the conference isn't enough to me.

quote:I don't know how much the dollars will impact, but 4 conference champs is the "safe" pick. Unless you put in a conference champ with a MUCH weaker record/resume, that's the way to go. But if a one loss SEC team got left out to a three loss Duke who upsets Florida St in the conference championship, there would be some explaining to do.
In the end, I think it is 4 conference champs if at all possible for $ purposes

Big 10 will not have anyone in the playoffs this year, they are awful. Notre Dame will take their spot.

This will not happen. The college football world would go apeshit over that scenario. In fact people wouldn't like to see two SEC teams in the playoffs.
Gregory is talking out of his arse.

3 SEC teams in the playoffs seems easier to pull off than 2 in the national title.

Yeah FFS, in this scenario you could at least mention the best all around team in the conference.

They still play USC, Stanford, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, and Arizona State.

Or, a home game to a team that was better. But, whatever. Don't use logic. It doesn't matter.
Saban will start lobbying for this by December 9th or so. "Well, the purpose of the playoff is to get the top four teams in the country ..."
It is all a colossal joke anyway.

No more so than a 1 loss PAC12 or Big 12 team being not NC good.

While true, historically most of the losses in the PAC 12 and Big 12 have come late in the season to teams many thought would contend. (Kansas St., Stanford, Oregon etc)
However, I DO agree they will do their best to have 1 rep from each conference. B1G being left out.

Why even bother worrying about this until the scenario plays out?

Notre Dame will end with 2-3 losses...of course, since it is Notre Dame they could still make the playoffs.

Need an 8 team playoff. This scenario will have to happen a few times with only one sec team getting in and that will lead to an 8 team playoff
