Sims Surprised Me But I'm Still Not Happy

I'm gonna start with saying that Sims impressed me, and for Coker to not get any playing time says a lot, but I'm still not on the Sims band wagon. I think he's serviceable but not the type of QB to take control and lean on when needing a game winning drive. You can point to the 73% completions and 250+ yards all you want but when you nickel and dime down the field against an unranked team it's not that difficult. How many passes were past 15 yards? The deep ball to Jones (which should have been caught) was under thrown and would have had a good chance of being intercepted by a better D. Jones had to turn around and stop to try and make a catch. How many of you would feel comfortable with having Sims leading a come from behind win like AJ did against LSU in '12? Again I'm not trying to take away from his performance. He did much better than I thought he would do, but I don't think he's capable to take us the distance.

I agree he is a step back from AJ but suspect he's the best we have. Also suspect he's good enough (how good did GMAC or AJ look their first start?) to lead us to a champ if the D can get it together

Yeah, kinda agree. Feel shitty for not being more excited when Sims exceeded expectations. But, just get the feeling he's not "the guy".

Exactly. It's obvious the kid has skill. He made some good decisions and turned some plays that would have been sacks into extra yardage But he didn't show me anything that made me put my faith in him. Maybe it's game 1 doubts or maybe I'm use to AJ but he left me with a "meh" feeling. With all the playmakers we have on O "meh" is not what I should be feeling.

Sims exceeded expectations. And we are Mostly disappointed. Think about that.

I can understand it though. He threw like 8 passes beyond 20 yards and completed like 2 (though that one drop by Jones hurt).

Im not the biggest Blake Sims fan, but thank God he is not Anthony Jefferson

Sims exceeded as far as staying calm and not making bad decisions (to me at least) but that doesn't negate the fact that majority of his throws were within 10 yards (24 comp for 250 yards). And that's not really a bad thing until you face a D that won't give up the short stuff and makes you beat them by throwing vertical. Like I said he impressed me and made good plays but the times when he had to make a long throw he was off target. With our O we need a guy who can display every ounce of what we can do.

He did a good job leading the offense in a two minute drill before the half. We needed a score and he got us one.
I think some of y'all have set the bar extremely high for Sims.

You do realize that ball was lofted like that on purpose, right? When a receiver is that wide open downfield the typical pass will have air under it and usually it'll be underthrown as well to insure that the reciever will be able to get his hands on it. If he was facing better defense that throw wouldn't have happened. I agree that Sims is no AJ (though that's an extremely unfair comparison), but I feel like he could certainly manage a game like McElroy did his first year.

For his first start, he did a great job. He was a leader, his 3rd down rating was great and the offense was balanced. I think Kiffin deserves a lot of credit for his preperation.

I think we lose at least 3 games if Sims starts. I was completely unimpressed and saw just a little improvement since the spring. It baffled me that with 3 years to prepare someone to take over for AJ, how Sims is our best option.

He was 10 times better than he was in the spring and 100 times better than he was last spring. I don't know how good he'll be the rest of the year but I'm encouraged.

All I gotta say is we can sit back and relax the next 2 games and watch Coker grow and the defense shake the rust off. Tony Brown and Marlon Humphrey need to get some work in as well. Sylve is just god damn turrible.

I'm glad we fed Coop though. He's just too damn good. Gotta get him the ball a lot.

Agreed. Like to see us target OJ and Drake in the passing game more

Definitely, but I think we'll see more of that when Sims settles in. We were clearly trying to attack the perimeter today.

Yeah, I never want to see Sylve on the field again. I thought all of our corners were shite tonight. Didn't notice any improvement from last year.

I doubt he beats out Sims. He was leading. They responded to him. He made some mental errors, but that is to be expected. 292 yards of offense.

That's wishful thinking. That may be true with polished QB's. But, Blake put everything he had into that ball and that's where it ended up.
I think Sims played as well as could be expected. We can win with him, but probably not every game.
