The number of people who identify as gay vs. the number of people who are gay is different. Only when society is so accepting of gays that they are comfortable enough to outwardly identify as homosexual will the actual number be known.

Intolerance of gays is no longer tolerated, even though gays are icky.

So as homosexuality has become more socially acceptable we should see a higher percentage of people identifying as gay. We don't.
Long story short, excuses excuses. Ain't many gay peeps.
