Anybody else heard anything recently concerning Wiley, and his grades? Like maybe...Prep School when the time comes?

These basketball classes confound me, as to0 who is eligible when...

He's not even done with his junior year yet. If the Hoover school system treats him like a football player that wants to go to Bama then they'll give him as many summer schools classes as he can handle over the next two summers and give him a light class load next year to make sure he's eligible.

I understand that, but some kids get so far behind, they can't catch up.

I going to just hope it isn't true, and maybe it will go away.

Not sure if anyone saw but Davion Mitchell fell some in 247 rankings & is no longer a 5* over there. Here's what Jerry Meyer had to say about it

quote:

I looked through his story history and all I could find was that he was a composite 4-star when he committed. Story before that has him at No. 54 in composite.

I'm thinking if I did have him as high as 13 and he dropped to 27, it was probably more that I became familiar with other prospects and a little that I might have overshot a little at 13.

I just don't remember on this particular ranking. I will tell you that it has nothing to do with him committing to Auburn.

There are a few more follow up posts that are in VIP so don't know what he followed up on but just in case anyone was interested. I must say he handled whining much better than Barton Simmons. That dude loses his shite anytime rankings are questioned and changes his stance every time

Houston PG Ronnie Johnson was in Auburn this weekend. He graduates in May and he's going to transfer somewhere for his senior year.

Former 4* that started out at Purdue. His primary goal is to lead a team to the NCAAT. Seemed to like Auburn but he has a lot of good options on the table. Going to decide in about a month

He said that generally he sees a 5* rated player as an NBA player along with several 4*s, and the rest as college guys. He said that there are few situations where program fit could boost a player's rating

He also said there is a lot of evaluation left to do for '17 and that rankings aren't final yet.

Barton Simmons is ridiculous.

The response on Mitchell seems completely legit. No problem with that

Program fit always seemed stupid to me though. Besides how subjective it is, the way coaches move that isn't even a fair measurement

Supposedly we feel pretty solid with Houston transfer PG Ronnie Johnson after his OV this weekend.

JLee said we are still looking for big guys. Seems like we aren't having a ton of luck

Not that we were ever worried about BP jumping ship, but it's being reported that Tubby Smith is the number 1 candidate for Memphis.

ETA: It's now being reported the two have agreed in principle to a deal.

Why anyone would hire Tubby Smith now is beyond me but good luck to them. Tubby won 1 championship at UK in his first year with Pitino's players and never made another final 4 in the next 9 years he coached there. In Minnesota he never took them to a Sweet 16 and his stint in Lubbock with Texas Tech is forgettable at best.

He gets teams in the Tourney. That is the goal of 99% of the schools. The goal of the other 1% is to win the Tourney.

I'm not sold on Tubby Smith but to give you some perspective by comparing to Auburn's entire history

Tubby Smith:

NCAA Tournament Appearances: 18 (72%)
NCAA Tournament not UK: 8
20+ Wins Seasons: 19
20+ wins seasons not UK: 9

Auburn History:

NCAA Tournament Appearances: 8
20+ Wins Seasons: 9

Wasn't like Tubby Smith coached at powerhouses other than UK either. Tulsa, UGA, Minnesota and TxTch aren't elite basketball schools

I know our history sucks. What he did at Tulsa and UGA was over 2 decades ago so I tend to overlook that because the game has changed and Tubby has aged.

His tenure at Minnesota and TTU was underwhelming so that's all I'm really referring to

I think he's a serviceable placeholder until they find someone they can go after.

ETA: Nevermind. I just saw his contract

At Minnesota, Smith had 5 20+ winning seasons ~33% of Minnesota's total and 25% of their tournament appearances (~50% official/non vacated)

Texas Tech was a dumpster fire post Bobby Knight. He had first .500%+ conference schedule since Knight and all his seasons were better than Gillespie + Chris Walker

Hard to judge off 3 years at TxTch given they were Auburn bad when he took over

ETA OT: Gillespie is coaching JuCo no

I agree, they are stupid now that I see his contract.

I view Tubby Smith as a guy who can get a good program consistently solid results but nothing special. The perfect placeholder for Memphis who has the foundation.

Former Barbee assistant Ryan Miller might get the UNLV head spot... he had been an assistant there, but wasn't being retained by Beard (who just took the TTU job two days after accepting the UNLV job).

George Karl probably gets that job. He initiated conversations with them, doesn't need a huge payout (SAC already paying him) and a solid coach/big name

Not sure what Ryan Miller is selling though. He has no HC experience and been part of lackluster teams since he left UNew Mexico

He took Minnesota to the NCAA tournament three times in his six years there. How is that underwhelming at a place like Minnesota?

They look really dumb canning him for Pitino's son.

Tubby Smith is a damn good basketball coach... the only two guys to ever do shite in Lubbock, TX were Bob Knight and Smith... its he'd as hell to win there.
