Get past the title, and read this column. It's excellently written, and very thought provoking.

I came in here all ready to troll/countertroll, but that was actually very thought-provoking like you said, OP.

Cops are domestic soldiers. When you consider the rank violence of American inner city streets, damn straight they are armed to the teeth because the criminals are.
Anybody thinks we ought to have a bunch of English Bobbies on bicycles riding around is nuts. Not when guns are readily available. I am not anti-gun. On the contrary, but when everybody has one, you can expect the cops to have something of a siege mentality.
Not condoning it, but I think there are issues that go well beyond race here.

I agree, read it before you respond.
Don't agree with everything he claims, and he's obviously coming from an emotional place right now. And he's too quick to explain away the looting.
But it's a well written piece. Everyone should be giving thought to the militarization of the police. The imagery that came out of Ferguson of local police on action to face down peaceful demonstrators were disturbing. This isn't North or South Korea.

What an excellent piece. Very well written and argued.

And yet unarmed people are being killed. There is a problem here.

This passage just hits me in the gut because I've been guilty of it so many times.
quote:
By all accounts, Brown was One Of The Good Ones. But laying all this out, explaining all the ways in which he didn't deserve to die like a dog in the street, is in itself disgraceful. Arguing whether Brown was a good kid or not is functionally arguing over whether he specifically deserved to die, a way of acknowledging that some black men ought to be executed.

well cops clearly over step their bounds and do evil shite everyday. However, I think the article tries to gloss over the riots. The protest shouldn't have turned into a riot.

Agreed. As is usually the case with most incidents.

Yes. Agreed. The police are part of the problem.

Cops being armed in one thing. Putting them in full military fatigues with military grade guns and armored vehicles is ridiculous.
Another article on that.

quote:I agree and him throwing that in there really ruins his whole piece. If you are going for through provoking piece and want change you don't throw in a paragraph that glosses over looting. You need to acknowledge that looting was a bad thing and shouldn't have happened. I believe in pointing out a weakness and saying it needs to be change instead of making excuses for it.

Well the looting, as bad as it was, really isn't relevant to whether or not this young man deserved to be shot.

Sorry about that. I have adblocker and pop-up blockers running so didn't get any.

I don't agree with many of his/her conclusions, but he lays an appropriate foundation. As always this discussion only leads to more questions as to the root of the problem, which is so complex at this point it is just about impossible to correct without a clean slate.
