Year 1 doesn't always determine success, but you know by year 3 if the coach is the right fit.
The exception, of course is if the coaching change results in such a dramatic turnaround one way or another. Example: Kevin Sumlin, Gus Malzahn, Ellis Johnson.

Like Houston Nutt at OM?

Sumlin is trending down bro, 8-4 was a Houston Nutt type year with the roster he had.
Sumlin also inherited the best player in school history. He gone now.

As tough as that 2007 season was, Saban still has never finished below .500 in any season. Overall or conference play.

You obviously made the number up, but any idea on how many coaches regress in their first year compared to the previous coach? I wish there was some sort of coaching stat database. it would be interesting to see different statistics.

Put some more thought into it next time around
Correct but coaching also includes coaching the players you have

I wonder if Bert has ever played on the see saw with his players.....prolly not many of them could put him in the air tho.

It's hard to build something sturdy or strong upon a weak foundation. 3-9 (0-8) is the foundation that Bret built at Arkansas last season. Surely whatever he builds upon such a weak base will collapse
i really hope you started a thread last July about Auburn's 0-8 "foundation" from 2012.

He really is building a solid foundation. Our Oline talent is better than it has been in many many years. Just have to have someone take over at center for Swanson and we're good to go there.
Our running backs are arguably as good as a unit 3 deep as any in the conference and even the country.
Pretty good foundation offensively.
Defense has to improve, but should be better this year as well. Our DLine is pretty good, back 7 is where the big stride needs to be made.

Look, if he had went 3-9 with 2012's roster I would get your point.
But losing the SEC's leading receiver, a 3rd round pick RB, a former all-SEC QB and an OL that saw time on the super bowl champions is kind of a big difference in the roster

This is college football you lose players every year, its the nature of the beast.

Yeah and you have to have good talent behind them, which we didn't have. Not Bielema's fault.

or be able to coach them, which is his fault. Yall act like the teams between 12 and 13 were completely different. you keep pushing the company line very well, I admit

So when Auburn fell way off after 2010, you're saying that was due to Malzahn's coaching and not losing players?
Posted on 7/18/14 at 2:15 pm to NYCAuburn
So its Gus' fault a 4* QB who ran his offense in highschool couldn't cut it on the college level?
He didn't know how to coach him?
I concur.

I guess Petrino should have been able to coach our offense better after losing McFadden, Jones and Hillis.
We started a former walk on at LT. We were forced to start 2*s at WR and Safety. This spring we had a total of FOUR scholarship LBs on the roster.
I've posted this quote from an anonymous SEC coach from last offseason before but I guess I'll have to start posting it in every thread about this
"They are going to be terrible. What they are doing now, it's the product of bad recruiting. They have a long ways to go. That's nothing against the new coaching staff. But they are going to be terrible in Year 1. I think they'll struggle up front, they'll struggle in the secondary, the linebackers should be average. It's going to take them three years to get a good foundation. It's a product of bad recruiting ? which is typical of Bobby Petrino. It's the same thing that happened at Louisville that got Steve Kragthorpe fired. Petrino didn't leave him any players. It's the same thing at Arkansas. They have no players on defense…I think the young running back, Jonathan Williams, is going to be good for them."
If you want to argue with him then go ahead

it was due to Chiziks coaching and loss of players, but its a little harder to duplicate perfection would you say.
But yes mostly due to chizik

Does he just play himself? Or are there OTHER team's players somehow involved?
Methinks you miss 50% of the equation.
Doesn't matter how much lipstick Bert put on this pig if the other guys are starting off at such a higher level of talent.
Unless you're not rational and/or live in a vacuum.

So when you were good in 2010 it was because of Malzahn, but when you sucked in 2011 that was because of Chizik.
So much spin.
