Changes coming to NFL feedback system for college underclassmen

Trying to stop so many juniors from leaving early.

HOOVER, Ala. -- Florida coach Will Muschamp said the NFL was "trying to help" with the rising number of underclassmen entering the NFL draft on Monday, but offered no explanation as to how.
Now we know what the changes will be, per NFL Media reporter Albert Breer, after Alabama coach Nick Saban hinted at them Thursday at SEC Media Days.

FYI: Saban was correct. Per @NFL, underclassmen will now be given 3 grades: 1st-round, 2nd-round, or neither, which equals "stay in school".

The old system gave underclassmen four grades: 1st-round, 2nd-round, 3rd-5th-round, and "lower". So they erased the 3rd-5th category.

Waaaaaay past due.
This past underclassmen draft, or lack thereof, was an abomination a discredit to the system ... which was obviously flawed.
The only good thing about it is that now coaches have three dozen high profile examples of why many underclassmen should not leave early.
It was getting out of hand.

honestly, i think this is a bad idea. if you're projected as a 3rd rounder or even a 4th rounder, depending on your position, there's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving early. as an adult making a business decision, they should be given all the information necessary to make that decision. i think only giving grades for rounds 1 and 2 is going too far. maybe that's just me

"Absolutely nothing wrong with leaving early"? Check out the numbers of players who left early who were never drafted in the past 3 drafts.. That number continues to grow & none of them returned to school to get their degree from everything I've heard or read. So they return to small town USA to get a job flipping burgers. These guys..and family/agents...need this kind of slap in the face as cold reality is one mean bitch.

It wont.
League minimum is enough of an enticement for a junior to go get paid for a year and then get cut and join the real world.

I agree. Players always have "experts" around them telling them how great they are so they believe it. Then on draft day, when the phone doesn't ring, reality sets in a little too late.

If they lack the motivation to finish up an extra year of school to get their degree is there any reason to believe these individuals would be successful with a degree in general studies, sports management, or whatever?

The best answer to the problem is to have the players declare the maximum round they could be drafted. If not drafted by that point, they come off the board and can return to their college team. Jrs would not be allowed at the Combine unless they declare for the entire draft.

Yeah but many of them are also temporarily satisfied with practice squad checks as well

link? plenty of them return to school. i had classes with a lot of former athletes during the summer when i was in college doing just that. and those guys that don't return to school, do you really think the majority of them were on pace and would ultimately finish their degrees had they not left early?

Why not have tiers that yo ucan declare for and if you do not get within that tier, then you can return to school?
Declare fully and go to the combine and get all the agent perks
Declare for the full draft(no combine) and if you dont get drafted, you can return to school.
Declare for a Top 3 rounds(no combine) and if you dont go in the first three but do go later, you can return to school.
What is the harm there? They have not gotten paid yet and have not missed any school. From Jan-March they are still on campus going through pro days and workouts anyways.

Sure....if they are happy making 100k for a year or two before they start their $10/hour career, go for it.

Glad they are finally addressing the situation.

This is good for college football; because it will hopefully deter young men from making a poor choice. I for one would love to see more teams having more seniors; which could produce a better product on the field. It's a win for the players, and the college teams.

They only see the next year.
AU's Jonathan Mincy debated leaving last year for practice squad money. Many would rather have it now, then after a degree.

That makes perfect sense. Soo such that it would never happen. One issue is Agents with this but they could sign with and agent after they're drafted. Plenty of time after the draft to get that done and have a contract negotiated with their team.

More schools are going to do what TAMU did for their OL and tap their contingency fund each of them get each year. It's capped but they could spend $360K last year on emergency trips home, suits for postseason awards shows, or insurance policy subsidization like TAMU did. They helped the kid buy the policy using the fund.
It'll happen more often now that TAMU used it and NCAA deemed it okay, and with kids having less clear information on the back end Evals. They'll stay in school but take out those policies just in case

I'm quite happy that A&M stepped up and did right by the kid. Everybody wins.
Shocked that the NCAA had a moment of clarity whilst their head is normally up its own rectum.
