Is Texas A&M going to be Exhibit A for the Ewing Theory this season?

For those of you that don't read Bill Simmons, here is the Ewing Theory.
Will the loss of Johnny Manziel actually make A&M better?
quote:
A theory hashed by ESPN.com writer Bill Simmons and his friend Dave Cirilli. It that explains the reason why teams inexplicably become better after their star player leaves the team for any reason (trade, injury, etc.). Two elements must be present for a situation to be explained by the Ewing Theory: 1) The team has a star player who receives a lot of attention but never wins anything, and 2) The star player leaves the team and everybody writes the team off.
Example: The Knicks lose Patrick Ewing to an injury in a 1999 NBA playoff series with the Indiana Pacers. Everyone writes them off. The Knicks then win three of the next four games and win the series to advance to the NBA finals.

Better? Maybe.
Our defense will be.
Our offense will not be, but it will still be better than everyone elses int he SEC.

The premise of the Ewing Theory is that by losing a star player, it allows other players who were overshadowed for whatever reason to shine, therefore improving team chemistry.
I could see this happening with A&M this year. I could see them at 2nd or 3rd in the West.

Meh. Yes and no. Cleveland lost LeBron and they have the least wins over the last 4 years of any NBA team.
We will be third in the West this year so not much better. 2015 we win the SEC though.

possible. Sumlin has not gotten to run his offense yet bec of JFF. He finally gets to bust out his 65-35 pass offense and see what it can do in the SEC.

I don't think so. They lost more than just Johnny, they also lost two other guys on offense that were drafted ahead of him. Not to mention what will still be a weak defense.
They are undoubtedly moving in an upwardly direction for the future though, and Johnny surely helped the program long term.

While what we lost is absolutely true. The impact of that loss is what is replacing them. For example, lets say you had a team that had Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. If one goes down to injury, its not that big of a deal.
QB, WR, and OL are the most talented positions on our roster so those losses wont be felt as much as people think. I know JFF's amazing plays are always on the forefront but its not like every single play he made was impossible. He throws bubble screens and other simple throws that a lot of QBs can make.

In all honesty, I'm not that familiar with A&m's roster. But if the theory requires the team to improve the following year after those losses, then I just don't see players stepping in and being better than those first rounders they lost.
We'll find out soon enough. I will say I was pissed to see Speedy go to a&m and that Texas receiver y'all just got in this upcoming class (name eludes me ATM). Receiving corps looks to be pretty scary for the next few years.

Appreciate your honesty.
Thats a rare trait on this board.
Many people aren't familiar with our roster.
All they know: "Manziel to Cleveland; other players drafted."
And since most of those same folks don't follow recruiting, in their uninformed minds, the situation equates to A&M never winning another game.
And that's their collective cue to .
While Manziel will be much missed, I think most Ags are very eager to see how this year's [more balanced] offense will look.

Until TAMU starts beating Arky consistently, I don't think we can consider them a serious contender for being improved.

Problem is they lost two other star players as well.

Like beating them every year they've been in the SEC? That kind of consistency?

Problem is one of those star players was a WR, far and away the easiest player to replace on a team. OL will be our best unit on the entire team.
LT - 4th year starter - RS-SR (projected top 10 pick)
LG - 4th year starter - RS-SR (projected 1st round pick)
C - 2nd year starter - JR
RG - Never started but been 2nd string - RS-SR
RT - 2nd year starter - RS-SO

This will likely be the norm for us for the foreseeable future.
That's not intended to be pompous, it's just reality.
As long as Sumlin continues to replace those guys with stellar players (on paper, many of his recruits are better), we'll roll with it.

Right but I'm saying they lost more than just Manziel. Not a shot at A&M, just a comment that the Ewing theory doesn't really apply here since they are replacing two other star players as well.
