Glad we get to read about the terribly exciting Iowa v. Iowa St. and Cincinnati v. Miami (OH) grudges.

Thanks for the post. A lot of good SEC match ups in there. Nice to see all of them in there for those of us that enjoy watching College Football in general.

Thank you. I tested the waters, seems this type thing is not welcome here.

4. Notre Dame vs USC
85 Total Meetings – Notre Dame Leads the Series 45-35-5

The game for the Jeweled Shillelagh pits two all time national powers in Notre Dame and USC against each other. Since the inception of the series, both teams have combined for 22 National Championships, 14 Heisman Winners, and 21 College and /or NFL Hall of Famers. The most recounted version of how the series got started is known as a conversation between the wives of Notre Dame Head Coach Knute Rockne and USC Athletic Director Gywnn Wilson. As the story goes, USC’s AD was sent to Lincoln, Nebraska to convince Notre Dame to play USC in a home and home series. Rockne was initially against the idea but Rockne’s wife was able to convince Rockne that trip to Southern California every other year was better than a trip to Nebraska ever other year; can’t say that we disagree with her logic. Regardless of how the series started we’re pretty glad that in an era of filling out your schedules with cream puffs (we’re looking at you SEC – minus LSU) these two traditional powerhouses still keep the face each other every year.

2a. Alabama vs Auburn
78 Total Meetings – Alabama Leads the Series 42-35-1

6. Alabama vs Tennessee
95 Total Meetings – Alabama Leads the Series 50-38-7 (technically 51-37-8)

17. Alabama vs LSU
78 Total Meetings – Alabama Leads the Series 48-25-5

Anyone else notice a pattern here.

Any list with Iron Bowl not at #1 is a joke.

11. Clemson vs South Carolina
111 Total Meetings – Clemson Leads the Series 65-42-4

Not only is the Clemson / South Carolina rivalry storied and history laden, it’s also quite possibly the strangest. With people and stories like Cary Cox, the only person to ever captain both the Clemson and the South Carolina football teams in a game against each other, or a counterfeit ticket riot in 1946 or the 1952 law which required the two schools to play each other… We could go on and on about the strangeness of this rivalry.

10. Oklahoma vs Nebraska
86 Total Meetings – Oklahoma Leads the Series 45-38-3

9. Texas vs Texas A&M
118 Total Meetings – Texas Leads the Series 76-37-5

How do you know this is a hotly contested rivalry? When both schools feel the need to mention each other in their fight songs; in fact nearly the entire original version (now 2nd verse) of the Aggie War Hymn is about Texas. I think it’s fairly common knowledge that football is a defacto religion in the State of Texas, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that in 2013, after Texas A&M left for the SEC, a Texas legislator filed a state bill that would require the two schools to play each other ever year, essentially making it a law. The filing of the bill may not even be most absurd part of this story, that’s probably reserved for the fact that the bill is STILL alive in the Texas House of Representative House Committee on Higher Education. As, my man Lloyd Christmas would say…. so you’re saying there’s a chance?

8. Auburn vs Georgia
117 Total Meetings – Auburn Leads the Series 55-54-8

Knowing that this series is so evenly matched makes last season’s “Prayer at Jordan-Hare” seem just that much more important in the rivalry known as the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.” The 1996 match-up between the Auburn and Georgia may go down as one of the best games in the series. Known by Georgia fans as the Miracle on the Plains, the 1996 game featured the SEC’s first overtime game and the SEC first multi-overtime game, with Georgia eventually beating Auburn in 4 overtimes. However most Georgia fans will remember the game as the game UGA V lunged out and nearly bit Auburn’s wide receiver Robert Baker. While Georgia can lay claim to dominating the 20’s and 40’s Auburn can counter with 50’s and 80’s; in fact, over the past 30 years, the series has been pretty back and forth with Auburn holding a slight lead at 16-13-1.

7. Florida State vs Miami
58 Total Meeting – Miami Leads the Series 31-27

6. Alabama vs Tennessee
95 Total Meetings – Alabama Leads the Series 50-38-7 (technically 51-37-8)

Ask any Alabama fan who their real rival is, and odds are they’ll say Tennessee. True or not, it’s probably truer than an actual slight towards the Crimson Tide’s more local rival. Known simply as “The Third Saturday in October,” the game pits two Southeastern Conference original members, Alabama and Tennessee, against each other. Despite the rivalry name, since the SEC split into and East – West alignment (1992), the game has only actually been scheduled for the actual third Saturday in October 10 times. However prior to that, the namesake holds true. This series is most definitely a series of streaks, in fact (factoring in ties) throughout the entire series only 3 times has the winner of this game broken the other team’s win streak and went on to lose the next season.

5. Florida vs Georgia
91 (or 92) Total Meetings (depending on who you ask) – Georgia Leads the Series 49-40-2 or 50-40-2, again, depending on who you ask

Dubbed “the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” because of its neutral site and events associated with tailgating, the annual Florida / Georgia meeting takes place in Jacksonville and quite often determines the SEC East champion. Since 2009 the winner of the game takes home the Okefenokee Oar, a 10 foot boat oar carved out of a 1,000 year old cypress tree from the Okefenokee Swamp, which is located in both southern Georgia and northern Florida. While Georgia may have dominated the beginning of the series, only losing 5 times from 1904 to 1951 Florida has had the better record as of late, only losing 6 times since 1990. The 1980 game may have had perhaps the best known Georgia play-by-play calls of all time when Georgia play-by-play man Larry Munson called the 92 yard touchdown pass from Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott…. forever known to Dawg fans as ‘Run Lindsay Run’.

4. Notre Dame vs USC
85 Total Meetings – Notre Dame Leads the Series 45-35-5

3. Army vs Navy
114 Total Meetings – Navy Leads the Series 58-49-7

2a. Alabama vs Auburn
78 Total Meetings – Alabama Leads the Series 42-35-1

Known simply as the Iron Bowl, the annual Alabama / Auburn mach up seemingly divides the state of Alabama all the way down to dividing families and loved ones. Although the game was played in Birmingham for many years, now in odd years Auburn hosts while in even years Alabama host. The 1972 Iron Bowl is best known for “Punt Bama Punt” when #2 Alabama led #9 Auburn 16-0 only to have Auburn’s Bill Newton block two punts and both times David Langer returned the blocked punts for touchdowns. Auburn went on to beat Alabama 17-16. In 2010 #1 Auburn came back from a 24-0 deficit to beat #11 Alabama 28-27. Led by Heisman winner Cam Newton Auburn would later go on and win the SEC Championship and beat Oregon for the BCS National Championship.

2b. Texas vs Oklahoma
108 Total Meetings – Texas Leads the Series 60-43-5

1. Ohio State vs Michigan
110 Total Meetings – Michigan Leads Series 58-45-6
