Seriously? You even surprised? I doubt there's an employee at Google that was alive during our last major war (Vietnam).
Hell, there may not even be one that was alive during the Gulf War.

google is usually pretty aware of public image

Doesn't matter. They honor people and events all the time that happened a long time ago.

They also honored Cesar Chavez on Easter instead of the majority of this country's God.
So yeah, no surprise.

I'm sure somehow in the liberal corporate culture at Google that recognizing Memorial Day would offend someone.

they did make a statement saying they felt it was day for remembrance and a doodle wouldn't have been fitting for a serious occasion. However, they could have went with what bing did

You guys sound like one of the campaign ads in the Chris Rock movie "Head of State."
If I don't make a Facebook status today acknowledging our soldiers, but on random other holidays I make one, do I hate the troops?
For a group of people that seems to always be complaining about freedom of speech and liberals orchestrating witch hunts when people say things they don't like, you guys seem awfully riled up over a company for not saying anything at all.

People have been asking this question since at least 2008.

You ain't Google dude. This is a national holiday, recognized by most companies big and small. It's important to our national culture. The US and what it stands for are the reason companies like Google can be started and be successful. By itself, no, what Google conspicuously chose to ignore isn't anything to get riled about. But like it was said, they have a history of this.

Way to focus on one phrase and ignore my larger point of hypocrisy. And FWIW, Google treats their employees so well there's no way they don't have Memorial Day off. So they do recognize it, even if they didn't make a little doodle to allow your searches to be a little more patriotic today. If you really care that much, use Bing.

I've already seen a lot of tasteless ads by several companies today, props to Google for not trivializing the memory of our fallen troops.

The same cannot be said for walmart, nike and so on. But hey, they wave an american flag and "salute" the troops for the holiday, so they are ok. What a joke!

Let's be honest here. That "recognition" by most companies involve jacking up pool accessory prices for their big "Memorial Day Sale".
Sadly, the American population has made it almost interchangeable with Veteran's Day at this point.

They placed an American flag and a yellow ribbon on their homepage. It's subtle and respectful.
What, did you want a 30% off sale for menswear at the Macy's or something? That'll show our fallen heroes that we commend their sacrifice!

Some of the people on here are absolutely insane.
