True. But most built a program instead of inheriting a program from Barry Alvarez.

so after 5 years he was still using Alvarez recruits?

How many first year SEC coaches have gone winless in conference play?
Posted on 5/23/14 at 11:49 am to hawgfaninc
I personally watched Alverez's last team destroy Auburn to end the 2005 season. we were one of the hottest teams in the country... beat eventual SEC champs on the road... only SEC loss was in OT in baton rouge.
in reality, the fact it took him five years from his starting point at Wisconsin should be a red flag.

He went 38-15 in those four years. I'll take that red flag every day of the week.

Serious question: How is Bielema (and staff) doing with recruiting efforts?
Not trying to turn this into a thread for the Recruiting Board, it just seems relevant to this topic.
On the whole (and on paper, obviously), does Arkansas seem to be meeting it's talent needs?

For what he wants to do offensively? Definitely.
Defensively? Probably not.

i was just looking up his record... the year immediately following Alverez (2006) was very good (12-1), then digressed for a couple years before picking back up in 09 and 10 (2010 being the first B10 title).
His overall conference mark was a little suprising to me... over his 7 years at Wisconsin, he lost 19 Big10 games -- 2.7 losses per year. That's still very good, but I was expecting something better, given his success and the three championships.

If he did that at Arkansas for seven straight years then he would probably land a lifetime contract.

Right, but 2.7 Big10 losses equals what in the SEC West?.... 5-3 or 4-4 seasons?
2.7 was good, but I was thinking it would've been lower given the three championships... granted, the last season skews the numbers a bit.

Right but if you win your four OOC games then you're 8-4 or 9-3 heading in to the bowl game every year. No coach has done that consistently at Arkansas in almost 30 years.
If you have the occasional 10+ win season when you have an upperclassmen laden team then I think you are looking at a realistic goal for what Arkansas can and should be able to do consistently in the SEC.

I honestly don't think Bert is the guy. He has the philosophy, power football works well in the SEC, but the guy can't recruit for shite. Relying on diamonds in the rough can work if you have innovative offense, but that's the opposite of what he has. Arkansas will never be a consistent power until they start winning recruiting battles against the SEC big boys, and stop filling the roster with guys who weren't offered by any other SEC school.
So to answer the OP, in four years I see Arkansas breaking in a new coach. If they're smart it will be a guy who can make Arky a trendy destination, or is an ace national recruiter.

I believe Bret could have a very solid OL and a very nice running game, but I see arky fans get impatient and him being fired by the start of the 2016 year
