starting to heat up this spring. My list (and I am ranking based on how GOOD OF A COACH they are (x's and o's, maintaining a solid program week-in week-out, recruiting, leadership/teaching, etc.),
1 Saban
2 Meyer
3 Miles
4 Spurrier
5 Stoops
6 David Shaw
7 Jimbo Fisher
8 Gus Malzahn
Honorable mention: Richt, Dantonio, Bill Snyder (not long ago he may have been top 3, but he has faded a bit I believe)

I mean, that's not that far fetched. He has done a lot with a lot less than miles. It's a valid argument.
I don't think Miles is top three, but is top 5. Jimbo up to 3 Miles is 4.

I think Jimbo is in the right spot. I think he's a great but not exceptional coach. Some on that list would excel at mediocre programs, and I don't think Jimbo is one. Same for Miles.

Spurrier is really the only one on that list that made something out of nothing.

I like Miles, a lot. He's one of my favorites. But if Spurrier had Miles' talent base combined with LSU's tradition he would have dominated at LSU.
Thankfully, he wanted more of a challenge and chose SC instead. But, while Les has done very well at LSU, Spurrier (IMHO) would have gotten far more out of that job.
Miles is still Top 4 IMHO.
Meyer is too high IMHO.

I think Shaw is an excellent coach, but perhaps it is too soon to put him in that elite company. He's only been HC 3 years, right?
Despite Stanford being an amazing academic school, it's not as though they disregard athletics thus making winning at Stanford shocking. The Stanford brass strongly support athletics.
Plus, it was Harbaugh who brought Stanford out of their football decline. Shaw may be an elite coach, but too soon to definitively say he is with the best of the best.
Just my two cents on a subjective scale.

No Chris Peterson? The guy has been just as succesful as the 2nd half of your list. He should be atleast 6th.
Gus on the list after 1 season? Dantonio and Peterson have a better track record in my opinion.
Charlie Strong?
Dabo?

quote:The flaw here is that you are assuming that he'd have still been able to amass the talent that Miles has. I'm not saying that he isn't a great recruiter, but that's easily one of Miles' biggest strengths (saban's, too), and we don't know how Spurrier would have done. At the time of our coaching change, Steve was still a widely-hated man in Louisiana.
But if Spurrier had Miles' talent base

Does anyone on your list have Conference Championships from two seperate Conferences ?

Spurrier should be #1.
He turned UF into a national power.
He has turned USCe into a top SEC program.
He won a Conf. Championship at Duke.
There is not a coach in the nation who has had a bigger impact on every program he has coached at.
