Miss. State's 1940 claim is more legitimate than what they did in 1941.
Stanford also has a legitimate argument for 1940.

It seems Auburn was making a habit of ruining perfect seasons for SEC teams in the early 1940s. They tied Miss. State in 1940 and beat Georgia in 1942.

It was a Six Pack joke a couple years ago. Those weren't printed by the university.
Although the 1941 story is interesting.
MSU outright won the SEC. Played at San Francisco on December 6, the next morning Pearl Harbor was bombed and the West Coast was shut down in response. MSU couldn't get back to Mississippi to accept the Sugar Bowl bid.
Sugar Bowl did not want a non-conference Alabama, so they took Big 8 Champion Missouri. Alabama finished #20 in the AP poll, and they still claim a national championship. Its the most bogus of the bogus.
MSU was a military-friendly school at the time, not like Gay&M, but the delay cause MSU not to play in a bowl game and most of their team never saw Mississippi again - they enlisted there in San Francisco and went and fought World War II.
Obviously it decimated the MSU team, and Ole Miss hired Vaught and completed dominated the next 30 years. Its basically why MSU is the laughing stock historically. Prior to 1941, MSU had a respectable football history compared to the rest of the SEC.

Sorry - first come, first served - Alabama claims their 2 losses are better than your 2 losses - ergo, National Championship!

No thanks. We prefer to let the other school in the state claim phantom championships...

Basically the further back you go, the more murkey the concept of a 'national champion' becomes.
It really wasn't until the 60's that the AP and Coaches' polls became the accepted defacto national title awarders.
And the REALLY old shite (pre 1936) is even more ambiguous. Most years you have multiple schools claiming on some basis, and it's hard to argue with them if they're undefeated that year.
Long story short, don't worry about what indvidual schools claim and just look at what the general consenus says.
The mainstream media these days only recognizes AP and Coaches Poll titles anyway. It's not perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than everybody claiming everything.

Minnesota were media darlings in the 1930s and 1940s. But you can't convince me that Stanford isn't a (if not "the") legitimate national champion for 1940.

I don't know about that.
1940
Minnesota: AP, Be, Bo, De, D, FR, Ho, L, NCF, S
Stanford: B, H, P
Tennessee: Du, Wi
UT actually claims this though.

And they will argue that shite to the very end. On what basis I really have no idea.
We have a decent argument for both years, but because we were shite for years and years after that because of the war, we didn't get any of the titles that were retroactively awarded.

#1 Minnesota :: 5 – 0 – 0 :: 8 – 0 – 0
vs
#16 Mississippi State :: 4 – 0 – 1 :: 8 – 1 – 1
