that was the plan with JJ, until they saw what type of year we were having and Nick started getting banged up... his RS wasn't pulled until after the Ole Miss game in mid-Oct, I believe.
as for ford, we'll see what happens... in-game experience is huge in a player's development... and it stands to reason he'll be more likely to contribute meaningful snaps sooner, though he may have sacrificed his 2017 season

I agree, which is why JJ should've redshirted.
Different situation than our RBs. We didn't want to have Wallace coming in if Marshall got hurt. We also didn't want Johnson coming in a big game with zero experience.
Ideally Johnson would've been redshirted but with the situation we had, we couldn't.

Those decisions had nothing to do with being a first year HC
quote:Boo-hoo. If we have to wait for every player to contribute the second year they are on campus, then we'll be in big trouble. Kid will either grow into a role with the team, or be replaced by someone better. The game has changed. And if you aren't a big contributor your 4th year, then you're pretty much worthless by your 5th year.
Ford did nothing in 2013 a walkon couldn't have done. And now he's a DB.
Oh, and not RS'ing Whitaker, Garrett, & Holsey their FR years allowed them to miss a year and not lose any eligibility. Looks like it was a good decision, huh?

So why would we redshirt him when we can get him some experience this year?
What game do you see him getting experience in?

I say RS Thomas if he cannot beat out those in front of him. One thing I love about Gus is that he has brought competition back to the Plains. Playing time is earned, not given because of what you did in highschool.

Any game with Mop up duty.
I think he can get in the RB rotation by the end of the year too.

It amazes me how many totally miss this.

First RS a QB and RB is way different. Not saying it was a mistake with JJ because Nick was hurt and we are recruiting QBs well
Second RS Whitaker, Garrett and Holsey would have no change in eligibility given what happened. Whitaker would still have this year, Garrett would have two years and Holsey would have 3. So not sure wtf you are talking about with them.
Not RS only has an effect on guys who are trying for a 6th yr

Just because that may have been Gus's reasoning doesn't make it the correct one. You guys sound like ITAT, and I never thought I'd be saying that.
But whatever, this subject was played out 6 months ago.

Sound like ITAT? Never been there. It absolutely was the correct decision. Sorry you don't have the capacity to see that.

If UGA knocks that pass down I guarantee you everybody here questions the decision.

Nick was seriously hurt. We didn't know when he would come back and we didn't know how injury prone he is.
Also Nick wasn't super hot to start the seaso. And didn't look comfortable running too much. Could have been Gus seeing if JJ could do better.
I love RS guys but seriously, JJs redshirt wasn't surviving the season

I defended it before the UGA game. I don't see how you could think it was the wrong decision. We needed a backup QB.

If they were RS and then got injured, you piss away 2 of their 5 years. Now, they've only lost one year. We recruit these players to make an impact on the field. Missing almost half of their elligibilty on RS and injury years isn't the goal and doesn't help the team.
Your argument basically boils down to believing there is no difference in Whitaker playing in the SECCG and BCSNCG in 2010 or him RSing that year away in street clothes on the sideline.

If they redshirted and got injured they can still apply for a medical hardship waiver for a 6th year. That is how Case Keenum played 6 for instance
Posted on 3/21/14 at 10:19 pm to GenesChin
Can apply would be key words. And doesn't that only apply to season ending injuries suffered in their RSR year? Let's not act like its a crutch to stand upon in this argument.
Let's look at this honestly, if they arent looking to make a jump to the NFL by year five of their college career, they probably shouldn't be in the starting lineup on a team competing for championships.

False. Bynes was UDFA and would have loved to have him past 3 years. Darwin Adams, Phillip Litzenkirchen, were both guys who didn't get drafted and nick contributors. JRosegreen is my favorite example of not working out in nfl due to size.
Going back further the biggest NFL not drafted success was Ben Nowland in 2003. Consensus All SEC 4 year starter who didn't even get drafted

quote:Over Jake Holland? No fricking way? What about CJ Mosely? Which would you have rather had instead? Let's look at D rankings of the two over their college career. Let's look at which D was more successful.

quote:Ummm, he still had elligibilty when he declared. How does that support your argument?
Darwin Adams
quote:While I love Lutz and what he did, he didn't exactly catch a ton of balls in college. Let's take the emotional attachment out of this. Orson Charles caught almost twice as many balls as he did.
Phillip Litzenkirchen
I also said Championship caliber teams. You pick out a few players to make a point?
Auburns record under Lutz was 33-19.
Under Bynes 36-16.
Adams 27-12.
Glad you think losing an average of over 4 games a year for those players equals championship caliber. Lets cut the BS, without Cameron Newton, none of those players comes close to even sniffing an SEC ring.

You are arguing guys who don't have real chances at jumping to the nfl shouldn't be starting. I am saying there are plenty of solid role players who aren't going pro/drafted early
Add Emory Blake to the list.
Adams left due to a combo of grades and family and wouldn't have been that high if he stayed another year anyways.
Obviously I want can't miss talent but not all 22 starters are going to be can't miss go pro after 3 or 4 year guys
