Wiki says 51% are protestant, 24% are Catholic, and 1.7 are Mormon.

Just sayin.

You said the reason they call themselves Baptists is because it's the largest Protestant denomination. There are a lot more Catholics than Baptists.

You said that they use the name Baptist to legitimize themselves.

If the recognized leader of the Catholic Church were to say that they weren't recognized by the Catholic Church then that wouldn't exactly legitimize them would it?

There is no one to do this with the Baptist church as a whole. The SBC has already denounced them, but Fred Luter doesn't get the publicity as Pope Francis.

This. If they had called themselves Westboro Catholic Church then the Pope publicly condemns them, it ruins them as a hype machine. Baptists defnitely disagree with their extremism. The reason for their choice is exemplified in some people's inability to look beyond the name. I wonder if they actually tried to join a Baptist convention but were rejected and use the name in response as negative propaganda.

It doesn't matter. It's a dumb argument on both sides. It doesn't matter that Phelps was/is a Democrat and it doesn't matter that it's the Westboro "Baptist" Church. Neither Baptists nor Democrats bear responsibility for this "church" and its actions.

Wrong, Catholicism is the largest denomination in the U.S.

I wasn't stating it as fact. I was not sure. I could find that there are 68 million Catholics, but could not find the total number of Baptists.

I would guess...and this is only a guess...that the families of Westboro possibly grew up Baptist, and felt most comfortable identifying with the Baptist denomination, then. However....always keep in mind that they represent only two or three families.

From Wikipedia: (Don't much care to use wiki as a source...but it is what it is)

It is headed by Fred Phelps and consists primarily of members of his large family;[5] in 2011, the church stated that it had about 40 members.[

Westboro isn't right or left wing. They aren't consistently politically affiliated to either side. They are simply just idiots who stir up emotions in touchy situations to get a reaction, then file a lawsuit and get money. It's not a political thing for them.

Not that I am aware of. This is pretty much a Westboro thing. They want the limelight....15 minutes of fame. I have no doubt they probably believe what they are doing is the right thing...but it certainly is not one that would be endorsed by the majority of religious institutions.

Make no mistake about it...Christians as a whole do not agree or condone Homosexuality. However, Christians also adhere to loving the sinner hating the sin. MOST Christians would treat homosexuals just as the would tread someone who lies, steals, cheats on their taxes, cheats on their wives, etc.

I think one person hit the nail on the head when they said that many people cannot get past the Westboro Baptist Church name. "Baptist" carries a lot of emotion with it. Many people see baptist and assume Southern Baptist. That is NOT the case with Westboro.

True...Methodist, Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian and others fall under the Protestant label. (Baptist, too, obviously)

Actually....ignorance makes people stupid. There are plenty of stupid people within religion and there are plenty of stupid people outside of religion.....religion does NOT make one stupid.

Not me, and not anyone who has an honest standard of just what a church is. Certainly not a Christian church.
