And roadGator either didn't bother to read the articles or watch his interviews, or he's deliberately obtuse. Or trolling. Which is by far the most likely scenario.

I am sure he can see that. And don't call him Shirley.

I'm reasonable. I could accept that he was doing this for the benefit of the NFL. It would be surprising to me if true though.

Poor Mark, dude just isn't suited to control anyone these days.
Thanks, Obama.

First, there's a difference between not hiding something and making a national production out the event. Also, don't you just love the way Sam supporters are so tolerant of opposing opinions. To me this has been the most telling aspect of the gay rights movement in general. Most of the supporters seem to be at least as intolerant as the people they condemn for being intolerant.
assuming that somebody is coming out for a marketing ploy or an excuse for if they fail is just as fricking stupid as assuming somebody is making it known they are Christian for the same.

Did you mean watched?
I'm not trolling. I just can see a scenario where the timing is on purpose.
Perhaps it's not, but taking away the silliness of some of my original language (I don't like be super serious about most matters), can you not get a picture of the possibility that the timing was deliberate and had a specific purpose.
I can see where I could be totally wrong and that's fine too. I've been wrong once before.

Honestly, this was the first thought I had about the matter.

I'm just saying it's possible. I have no intimate knowledge of the Sam outing and I'm glad for that.
Are you saying that it's not in the realm of possibility that it was purposeful as regard to the timing?
Marketing folks do this all the time for celebs and wannabe celebs.

Doesn't mean that their respective agents didn't consider each good marketing strategy.

Yea all you are doing is wondering if its possible this is for marketing.
And you did that by talking about limp wrists with lisps wanting to know how their brother dealt with drab uniforms as they buy up pink gear with his name on it.
But again, you are just asking a question. That's all.

Yes, that's what I meant. And while I can see how a cynic might arrive at the conclusion you suggest, I don't believe that was the case. He never planned to hide it, and always planned to be up front prior to the draft with the teams that were interested in him. But he realized that a lot of people knew, and that some in the media were going to run with the story before he was ready. So, he announced it himself so he could tell his own story and get it out of the way. He gave 2 interviews, and said there will be no more. He said he just wants to focus on football.
So I don't think it's a marketing ploy. It's too risky. And he has no plans to become an activist, or start being a spokesman, or be grand Marshall of gay pride parades. He wants to play football.

The timing was deliberate. And while I'm not a supporter of his orientation, I can't fault him for that.
I'm a marketing guy--I think it was an excellent (if risky) move.

Possible, yeah. But the timing is wrong if it was done for strictly publicity sake. After a good to great performance in the combine and before the draft would be the real marketing sweet spot.

See, that's the most reasonable counter point here.
Taking control of the story is also a possibility I can see.
I hope that is indeed true. However, even if it's not and he did this for other reasons, I think it's brilliant as long as he can manage the pressure.
