No one is the champ for that year. The title was vacated. Because there was a system in place where #1 played #2, how can Auburn claim the title when they did not even play in the game?

Because there was another system in place whereby someone, a system/awarding authority used by other University's to claim NC, declared that team National Champions.

The same system that everyone agreed to play under.

I was just answering the question. I know you struggle with reading comprehension, but I'm not sure how you missed that.

I think its cute that bama fans define what can and cannot be claimed as a MNC

For the rest of time. Maybe, who knows.

In all seriousness I don't care what banners they hang.

They can't. Love or hate the BCS, it was the system in 04

USC is still the '04 champ because they retained the AP title. Auburn has no claim for 2004.

They're trying to claim past titles. At least schools that have done this before have done them sort of close to the time that they were named champions by a poll. Auburn could have some claims except for 2004 because of the BCS
No school has claimed anything besides AP and Coaches poll titles in the past ~50 years.
If you wanna claim anything older than that, you're gonna need some good criteria. Any season where you had a perfect season is a valid candidate. I only see 1913 as a legit claim. Anything pre 1936 is just sort of the wild west anyway and you have tons of people claiming all sorts of stuff.
