Aggies, are you guys concerned at all about Strong at UT?

He's a heck of a recruiter and should maintain some in-roads into SFL. If he can get some gems out of there and gets UT back to recruiting good TX players, I think he'll be able to get the Horns really good really quick.
Does he concern you guys at all with the balance of power?
I'm not certain how good of an actual coach he is yet so, that's to be determined.

They better be concerned.

The two big Texas programs both now having black coaches - trend-setters or oneupmanship ... or a simple case of keeping up with the Jones? (Although Strong has Victoria while Sumlin has Charlene.)
Where's T-Bird - I need some insight as to the advantages.
Eta: Would Texas have taken the plunge had A&M not already blazed the path?

He certainly hasn't started very well. It's a mess right now.
If he win, and we struggle, he can get momentum back for Texas. I don't think it'll happen. I think Texas is a bad job for him. He was terrible in the press conference.
"If something is soft, you just have to work it hard enough, and it'll get hard." He actually said that.

As long as we have Sumlin No. The major advantage we have with instate kids now is the SEC. Kids in Texas want to stay close to home and play in the best conference, and we are the only school in Texas who can offer that to them. Do I think Strong will be successful? Yes, but I think we will still get ours.

A&M is recruiting lights out right now, in and out of the state of TX. Until Strong proves he can do something at UTx, I wouldn't be worried if I was an Aggie.

Not so much concerned as intrigued. I am more concerned about who he hires. He is a great recruiter but he can't do it alone. Time will tell but I've said it before and I'll say it again as long as we keep winning and remain competitive in the SEC then we will be just fine.

But that press conference plays no role for the future
Not sure of your point

meh.
i mean i wanted Strong over Sumlin 2 years ago, but haven't been disappointed with the results.
The problem at Texas is not the coaching or even their recruiting. The problem is that they have started buying into their own hype too much and cared more about being the Jonses than winning football games. The year before 5-7 all we heard was Garrett Gilbert, Longhorn Network, richest AD in the world, and about their stars. they've been mired in mediocrity ever since.
They care more about how many 5 star recruits they get than developing them. Mack Brown passed on the last 3 Heisman winners because they wanted to play QB and they weren't Texas good. Who was Texas good? Case McCoy and Garret Gilbert.
Honestly, I'm more worried about fat, dumb, and happy DeLoss Dodds leaving than a new coach.

In regards to recruiting, he does not have the connections with the Texas high school coaches our staff has and early recruiting has changed Texas so he can't make real inroads until 2015. There is a good chance he won't run the offense that Texas talent wants to be a part of, and in our state almost all the best high school talent is on the offensive side.
I completely expect for him to continue to raid into Florida to make up for the lack of connections he has in our state and to get the type of player he prefers. We stole a DT from him (a defensive coach mind you) like it was nothing and his solution was to look outside of Texas.
As far the battle for relevant supremacy in the state, Texas will eventually be swinging again with Charlie or without him. Our bigger worry is making sure OU's program continues to have to focus on Cali because their brand matters less and less in Texas. They almost fell off the relevance map until Saban screwed the pooch.
tldr: The Alabama loss hurt us more than Texas hiring Charlie Strong.

A guy that sucks in front of a camera (Strong does), is not a very good fit for Texas. He's going to be on camera a lot, and perception is everything in recruiting.
Sumlin, on the other hand, is incredible in front of a camera. In that coach's corner NC thing on ESPNU, he was the alpha dog in the room, and everyone knew it.

Pretty sure Mack is gone, man.

Kids want to play in the best conference?
How do you explain the kids that go to FSU then? ACC will clearly never be confused for the best conference.

That logic is just asinine.

Please, dude. This is not hard. One major factor the effects a kid's decisions in the conference they'll be playing in. It's not the only factor. For example, say the kid is from Florida, and wants to stay in Florida, but doesn't want to play at a train wreck of a program for a coach who looks like he's about to explode half the time...what's the kid to do? Well, he has to play in the ACC.

No.
It's like the two programs are on different planets right now.
Bottom line: Few kids would rather play against Iowa State, Kansas, and/or TCU rather than Alabama, LSU, and/or Auburn. Dismiss it, if you will.
And Sumlin is a freak.
Strong is a good coach. I hope he works out for em.

So Strong won't get good recruits because he's not so good in front of a camera.
Nevermind the facilities and history. Or the money.
He's bad on camera. Lol
