Given the personnel returning (let's assume Clinton Dix leaves) what is the potential of the 2014 defense?

As long as Cyrus Jones is not getting a lot of PT, I'm optimistic.

You think Jones will still start over Smith or Brown? Of we are going to have a weak CB, at least let it be a young guy who will improve.

As it looks, we'll have Suneri, Collins, Perry, and Williams at S. LB depth will be excellent. I like the depth we'll have next year

Jones will get a whole lot better by next season, IMO. He was thrust into the CB situation right last year, and was just learning the position. He will be fine.

I'll take a crack at the 2-3 deep base defense
DE: Allen---Liner----Hand
DT: Reed----Ivory---Lake---Frazier
DE: Robinson---Pettway---Hand
Sam: Lee---Anderson---Jones
Mike: Depriest---Ragland
Will: Foster----Ragland
Jack: Devall---Dickson---Williams
CB: Jackson---M. Smith---Averett---Washington
FS: Collins---K. Williams----G. Smith
SS: Sunseri---Perry---Hootie Jones
CB: C. Jones---Sylve---Brown---Cook
4-2-5 I think looks like this:
Allen
Robinson
Pagan
Pettway
Lee
Depriest
G. Smith (star)
C. Jones
Collins
Sunseri
Jackson

Dillon Lee will not start over Anderson.

He might. He's a better coverage guy. As situational as our LB's are starter/backup is a moot point anyway there, that was just my best shot at a base guideline

To be honest, it's a reason Saban started him and I think it was to take his licks early and to grow. Jones was an athlete trying to play corner in 2013. In 2014, I think he will be a corner who is an athlete.

Uh Anderson is a pass rusher not a coverage LB

Is our depth at MLB going to be thin in 2014?

Trey DePriest (Senior)
Reuben Foster (Sophomore)
Reggie Ragland (Junior)
The three returning guys who have been in the system, Trey coming off of two years starting. Plus Dillon Lee.

I think Ronnie Clark may land at MLB before it's all said and done too. A year to bulk up to around 230 and you've got a guy in the CJ Mosley mold
Posted on 1/8/14 at 10:30 pm to Riseupfromtherubble
True. I was kinda hoping Ronnie could settle into a Money like role, but put him in the middle he could be a force.

I think he's a little too stiff to play a primary coverage role. Initially I thought SS but after watching some tape, while a really good athlete, he's kind of a glider and not really a quick twitch guy. He is a guy that can run sideline to sideline though from the middle and do a good job of covering backs and tight ends..but he doesn't have any business covering slot guys
He looked like a natural at MLB in Orlando

He'd be really key against HUNH teams if he was playing ILB, that's for sure.

I really hope Mo Smith makes a big leap this summer and comes in to take the other corner spot across from Eddie

That's a hell of a defense if it works out that way.

Sick avi FourThreeForty, this 2 week layoff has had me jonesing hard
Just looking at all the pieces Bama has on the table shows they can do a variety of things in 2014. As foolish as it sounds, they could have a 2nd defense for the HUNH if they wanted. The evolution of the back 4(actually just the side 2) is crucial, but Bama should be fine up front.
With the attrition of some starters, it allows Bama to run more through those positions and see what they can get out of them. OLB needed some new blood, this past year was statistically the worst TFL/Sack year under Saban.
I would like seeing some competition at NG, rounded players like a Reed or Robinson offering a little more. Ivory has done a fine job, but he's at his ceiling IMO. Someone who can be more of an impact when needed in some faster situations. Not necessarily a new starter, but a better option alongside Ivory.
